Shrinking Season 2 finale: Why does Jimmy save Louis? Explained

Apple TV+ comedy series Shrinking, starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford, premieres its season 2 finale on December 25, 2024. The series follows a grieving therapist, Jimmy, who has lost his wife in an accident.

He starts to break the rules and sway away from his work ethic and begins giving brutally honest advice to his clients.

Loius appears in Jimmy's life as his client but stirs up deep emotional feelings when Jimmy finds out that he is the drunken driver in the car accident that killed his wife Tia.

In the Season finale despite the past, the series shows Jimmy saving Louis from ending his life. Why does Jimmy save Louis? Read further to know in detail.


Why did Loius want to take his life? Jimmy and Louis' relationship explored in Shrinking

Season 2 of Shrinking leads Louis to a darker place with the accumulated guilt and trauma of what he has done to Tia. Brian and Jimmy's daughter Alice become Louis' friends which helps Louis deal with his guilt and move on.

But, no matter what progress he makes, he is not acknowledged by Jimmy. Therefore Louis started to spend more time with Alice.

However, Jimmy never wanted Louis in his or his daughter's life as that reminds him of the year post Tia's death when he failed to support Alice. When Alice last meets Louis she finds him doing well as he has now a friend at work.

But soon when the new friend becomes aware of Louis' past he abandons him and uninvites him from Thanksgiving. This leaves him all gloomy and he is determined to take his life by jumping on train tracks.


Why does Jimmy save Louis in Shrinking?

In the season 2 finale of Shrinking Jimmy saving Louis shows a complex emotional and narrative resolution. The finale picks up from Jimmy's breakdown on Paul's lap where Jimmy confronts his fears and the weight of the mistake he made with his daughter Alice.

Jimmy throughout the season grapples with grief, his feelings for Louis, and what he feels for Alice. Louis's close presence in Alice's life reminded Jimmy of his failure to support his daughter after her mother's death.

In season 2 episode 11 on a call with Paul, Jimmy confronts the grief he was always avoiding, including that he needs to make amends with Louis. Jimmy manages to reach the station tracks before it's too late.

This is followed by a scene where Jimmy and Louis are sitting on the station bench, their connection is evident as they help each other work through their struggles.

Eventually, Alice also realizes that cutting ties with her father is not a solution. She remembers how he has always been helpful to people and how even when he was at his lowest he looked out for her. Alice realizes how much she loves her father and chooses to do the right thing.

“There are a lot of important storylines, but, for me, the relationship between Jimmy and Alice, in a lot of ways, is the primary storyline, at least in Jimmy’s life, as it should be,” Segel tells The Hollywood Reporter of the season two ending.

Therefore, Louis and Jimmy's story ends with forgiveness keeping up with the name of the finale episode of Shrinking "The Last Thanksgiving".
