Sirens is a dark comedy drama consisting of 5 episodes, each lasting around an hour and is a perfect ride into a seemingly glamorous but contemptuous world on a fictitious island. The mini-series is created by Molly Smith Metzler and is based on the play Elelmeno Pea. The show was released on May 22, 2025, on Netflix, and parents are wondering if the show is suitable for their kids.

The story explores the relationship between two sisters who grew up differently. The younger one, Simone, lives an outworldly life as part of a cult-like, wealthy organization where everybody is under Kiki's siren, depicting her influence over everyone, including Simone. When the elder sister, Devon, arrives looking for her and takes her home before their father loses all his memory, their life takes a turn.

The show is rated TV-MA, which refers to "mature audience" and hence is not suited for younger kids or teens. Read on to know more.

Many of the show's themes are very mature with s*xual content, s*icide and emotional manipulation. Like the trailer suggests, Kiki and Simone sometimes even sleep together, while Kiki's husband admits his wife's deep influence over everyone. This refers to some cult-like practice taking place on the island. Devon's arrival on the island unveils several dark truths about the family, along with Devon's traumatic past.

In one scene, she is shown licking a man, Jose, during a hug on the neck, which suggests her absurd relationship with boundaries as a result of past trauma. This is the reason why Sirens is rated TV-MA, referring only to adults, as it delves into content that may be unsettling or inappropriate for younger viewers. The rating reinforces that the show is created with adult viewers in mind. It includes some s*xually provocative scenes and strong language. The cult-like control isn't just exaggerated drama, but intense manipulation, and it might leave younger viewers confused and disturbed.

Therefore, the minimum age to watch Sirens is 18 or above. However, for kids around 15-17 years old, their parents might opt for watching the show with some guidance and discussion.

How can parents decide whether to let their child watch Sirens or not?

As mentioned, it is clear that Sirens is created for adult audiences, and even if the parents are thinking of watching it with their older teen, they should note that there is a lot of strong language in the show. A lot of the drama is abusive and manipulative, and can have a serious impact on a teenager's brain, when they are still figuring out the meaning of many things around them.

How your child processes strong language and s*xual content, along with mature themes like s*icide, can be detrimental to their development. Are they misinterpreting the power dynamics, or are they emotionally mature enough to sync in that hard-hitting information? If you choose to watch the show with your teens, you can provide insights that help them process what they are watching on screen and avoid any misinterpretation and wrong influence. In this case, parents can also pre-screen privately first and make the best decision for their child. However, the bottom line is that Sirens is not suitable for young teenagers or kids.
