Janelle Brown and Christine Brown offered revealing insights into their past relationships with Kody Brown during the third part of the Sister Wives: One-on-One special, which aired Sunday, June 8, on TLC. The long-running reality series Sister Wives has followed the lives of Kody Brown and his plural family for nearly two decades.

Kody, 56, was spiritually or legally married to Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn Brown, though three of those relationships have since ended. During the latest Sister Wives episode, Janelle reflected on emotional cycles in her nearly 30-year marriage with Kody, while Christine shared how her new relationship with husband David Woolley reflects a complete personal transformation.

The conversation covered topics including accusations of emotional manipulation, finances, intimacy, and the challenges of monogamy after leaving polygamy.

What happened in the Sister Wives episode

In Sister Wives season 19, episode 28, Janelle Brown, 56, reflected on her marriage with Kody Brown during her sit-down with host Sukanya Krishnan, claiming that their relationship followed a repeated pattern that she compared to “a cycle of love bombing.” The term, as explained during the Sister Wives interview, refers to

“a form of psychological and emotional abuse often disguised as excessive flattery,”

according to the Cleveland Clinic. Janelle said on the June 8 broadcast,

“I do think that there was a cycle of love bombing and then, like, almost kind of, like, a wind down.” She added, “For a narcissist, there’s a cycle where you love bomb and then you sort of, there’s sort of a waning and then you almost kind of, like, destroy or hurt them and then to fix it, you come back in and you love bomb. And so, there was kind of this cycle.”

When asked if she was labeling Kody a narcissist, Janelle clarified that she wasn’t making a diagnosis, explaining she’s not a psychologist or psychiatrist and only familiar with pop culture references. Still, she admitted there appeared to be several similarities.

Financial dynamics in the Sister Wives family were also discussed during the same segment. Janelle alleged that she handled bookkeeping responsibilities, but the major financial decisions were in Kody’s hands.

“He always seems to come out ahead financially on a deal,” she said. “I just think he’s always looking out for himself and now for Robyn and himself.” She added, “He just always somehow thinks he’s somehow entitled to more. It’s astounding. I think he really is just kind of inherently selfish.”

Christine Brown, 53, who separated from Kody in 2021, backed Janelle’s account, saying they were never aware of how much money the other wives received, only what they had. She added that Janelle had access to all the financial details. She recounted a past conversation where Janelle told her,

“‘I saw where all the money was going. And how much money Kody took and how much money Robyn took was a lot more than you were taking, and it was more than anybody else was taking.’” Christine concluded, “He takes care of himself. He sees what he needs to do, and he just does what is right for him and what is right for Robyn.”

The Sister Wives installment also included Christine discussing her decision to have sex before marriage with David Woolley, a departure from the teachings she once followed as a polygamist wife. Speaking on the June 8 episode, Christine stated,

“We’re going to make love first because I needed to make sure there was going to be physical attraction before I would settle into a relationship with somebody.”

Christine Brown described her relationship with David Woolley as deeply fulfilling, saying they naturally progressed into every aspect of their bond because of how special and beautiful it felt. Reflecting on her former marriage to Kody Brown, she admitted that it lacked true intimacy—emotionally, romantically, physically, and even financially. She pointed out,

“When you have s*x five times in a year, you realize there’s a problem.”

Christine also recalled confronting Kody about the absence of physical closeness, to which he bluntly responded that there wouldn’t be any intimacy going forward. That, she said, was the moment she told him he was no longer welcome in her bed or her home.

Christine, who took her relationship with David public on Valentine’s Day in 2023 and married him later that year, said the difference in her confidence now is visible. “I can just be me,” she said during the Sister Wives special.

Sister Wives: One-on-One, part 4, will air on Sunday, June 15, at 10 pm ET on TLC.
