Six years after the sophomore season of Big Little Lies concluded on HBO, creator David E. Kelley is still hopeful for a third season. Big Little Lies was based on Liane Moriarty's 2014 novel of the same name and ran for two successful seasons before coming to the end of its road.
The show starred Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon in prominent roles, and over the last few years, speculation surrounding the fate of a probable third season has been kept alive by the cast and the creator of the show.
Here's everything that you need to know.
Creator David E. Kelley is hopeful that Big Little Lies will return for a third season
David E. Kelley recently spoke with People magazine while attending the Gotham TV Awards in New York City. The sixty-nine-year-old creator was given the Visionary Tribute at the award ceremony for Presumed Innocent on Apple TV+. Speaking about the third season of Big Little Lies, Kelley commented:
"We're hoping it happens. We had a great time doing the first two seasons and we all want to do it again. I'm hopeful it'll happen."
Despite true intentions, the one reason why HBO and Kelley haven't been able to come around to kickstart work on the third season of the show is that the leading cast members, viz., Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz, are all quite busy in their individual careers and haven't yet been brought together under a binding contract.
"You need to corral a lot of high-caliber talent and their publicists, but everyone is very committed to it."
Notwithstanding the uncertain status of the third season, Kelly expressed his delight in knowing that the entire cast was passionate about returning to the show. Kelley further noted:
"I think it's a credit to Liane Moriarty, too, who wrote the original book, and she's written another book that season 3 will be based on. It's a pretty good collection of talent."
Kelley also mentioned that author Moriarty is currently working on developing a sequel story that might be taken up by the third season whenever it comes around. He added:
"We haven't really all gotten together to brainstorm yet, but again, it's a great stable of talent. Once we do (get together), I think we have a good shot of figuring it out."
Nicole Kidman spoke about Big Little Lies
Speaking in an interview with Elle magazine, Kidman had previously mentioned that she and the other members of the team were keen to return to the HBO show for a third season:
"There’s the richness of the storylines, which we’d always discussed, but it needed time because there’s actual unbelievable depth to the next chapter of these women’s lives and their children’s lives — because children grow up, and that’s kind of fascinating."
The first and second seasons of Big Little Lies are available on HBO.
