Small Town Scandal is an upcoming TV adaptation of Tom Sainsbury’s eponymous true-crime parody podcast. The Sky New Zealand series stars Sainsbury in the lead role and revolves around a disgraced journalist, Toby.

The journalist, who has turned into a podcast host, moves to his hometown after his uncle is killed under mysterious circumstances. As he investigates the mystery, he realizes the people of the town are hiding some dark secrets.

The lead cast of the show has now been announced. Apart from Sainsbury, Small Town Scandal is going to star New Zealand comedian and actress Rose Matafeo and English actress Felicity Kendal.


Small Town Scandal to star Rose Matafeo and Felicity Kendal

Rose Matafeo is going to play Toby’s cousin Carol in Small Town Scandal. The comedian and actress has previously been seen in the shows Starstruck, Dead Pixels, Golden Boy, Squinters, and Funny Girls. She has also appeared as herself in comedy and reality shows like Taskmaster, Big Fat Quiz of the Year, and Landscape Artist of the Year.

Felicity Kendal will portray Toby’s mother, Sue, in the upcoming show. She is a veteran English actress who has appeared in several series and films. Her television credits include Ludwig, Rosemary & Thyme, Honey for Tea, and The Camomile Lawn. Some of her movie credits are Parting Shots, Valentino, and We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story.

Other cast members who will appear in the show include Morgana O’Reilly and Alexander England. O’Reilly is an International Emmy Award-winning actress who has previously appeared in The White Lotus, Playing Gracie Darling, The Sounds, and INSiDE. Alexander England has earlier starred in Mr & Mrs Murder, Wild Boys, Paper Giants: Magazine Wars, and Offspring.

Small Town Scandal will premiere on Sky New Zealand in 2026. The show chronicles Toby, a journalist cum podcaster who returns to his hometown to investigate the suspicious death of his uncle. The official synopsis of the series reads:

“Toby, a disgraced journalist turned podcast host, returns to his rural hometown to investigate the bizarre death of his millionaire uncle – killed, suspiciously, by an automatic lawnmower. As Toby dives deeper into the case, he finds himself surrounded by a cast of quirky, eccentric townsfolk – all with secrets of their own.”

The show has already wrapped filming and is currently in post-production. It has been produced by Tom Sainsbury along with Carthew Neal and Georgina Conder. The series has been directed by Calvin Sang and Ghazaleh Gol. Sainsbury talked about turning his podcast into a television show in an official statement and said:

“I’ve always loved the quirks of small-town life and getting to bring Small Town Scandal from podcast to screen with such an incredible cast like this has been a dream. A satirical take on small-town drama and true-crime obsession – it’s absurd, heartfelt, and full of mystery.”
