Slow Horses is a British spy thriller series based on Mick Herron's Slough House books, and its plot revolves around a group of MI5 agents who are moved to Slough House after making critical mistakes. These "slow horses" are regularly involved in genuine hazards, led by the gruff but astute Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman).

The cast primarily includes Sophie Okonedo, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Jack Lowden, and the program, which has won plaudits for its writing and performances, has completed four seasons. It has also been renewed for a seventh.

Slow Horses Season 5 debuts on September 24, 2025, and its narrative is based on London Rules and features new cast member Nick Mohammed. Recently, as per an interview with Deadline, it was revealed that the show's writer and executive producer, Will Smith, will not be working on Slow Horses after the fifth season.

Slow Horses will make a return on Apple TV+ on September 24, 2025, for season 5, and the program, known for blending caustic espionage drama with dark comedy, will continue to follow Slough House's misfit spies. These are mainly led by the candid and astute Jackson Lamb.

The main writer and executive producer of the show, Will Smith, has shared with Deadline that Season 5 will be his last work on Slow Horses, and he also revealed that leaving was a creative choice.

He said,

“I think it’s a big show and it’s an intense process. And I suppose I didn’t want to lose the sense of fun of it."

According to Will Smith, he didn't want the caliber of his work to suffer because the timetable had grown more rigorous. He clarified that he wanted to go away while still giving it his all, not because he felt too good for Slow Horses.

The series will continue despite Smith's departure. A huge storyline twist happened at the end of Season 4, when River Cartwright discovered that his biological father is Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving), a lethal former CIA mercenary and terrorist. The season concluded with the emotional effect of Marcus Longridge's death and a rare moment of respect between Jackson Lamb and River, laying the groundwork for greater upheavals ahead.

The fifth novel in Herron's series, London Rules, will be adapted for Season 5. Roddy Ho, the socially awkward tech agent who shocks the team with a stunning girlfriend, is the main character of the story. The Slough House crew quickly finds itself in the midst of another national crisis as suspicions build and a series of violent incidents sweep around London.

With the return of Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden, Gary Oldman, and others, the cast remains strong. As a sardonic politician with his own secrets, Nick Mohammed joins the series as Zafar Jaffrey. In addition to wrapping up certain long-running character arcs, Season 5 sets the stage for the show's upcoming phase, which will include continuous stories and a new creative team.
