Ruth Bradley, who joined the Slow Horses cast in its fourth season as Emma Flyte, recently spoke about the moment from the original books that she would like to play on screen.
The show, which has returned to Apple TV+ with its fifth season, has been adapting Mike Herron's novel series, Slough House. In its first three seasons, the spy thriller followed the team of failed or disgraced MI5 agents working from Slough House. It also explored the dicey professional relationship between Jackson Lamb and MI5's Diana Taverner.
The fourth season introduced Flyte, a leader of The Dogs and MI5's Head of Security, who causes trouble in the lives of Lamb's team. Until now, the show has revealed her assertive side, which goes along with her work profile. However, the character hasn't been developed enough to let us see other sides of Flyte's character and realize some of her core motivations.
In line with this, the actress recently spoke with ScreenRant about the scene from Herron's books that she would like to portray as Flyte. It can take us closer to learn Flyte's backstory. Here's what Bradley said,
"Oh, that’s a lovely question. In book 4, she gets into some kind of argument with Taverner. I don’t remember if she fires her or gives her a real battling, but Emma ends up in a pub drinking beers and downing shots. That really stuck out to me. We haven’t seen it on screen, but I’ve been very aware of it in my mind that when she goes home, she cracks into the booze. That’s her life, and that’s why she’s judging Lamb. I missed that, but it may come up at some stage later, who knows?"
The Slow Horses star sheds light on the aspect of Emma Flynt's personality that she would like to explore
In the same interview, Ruth Bradley was asked about a part of Flynt's personality that she would like to be explored by the showrunners, even if it hasn't appeared in the books. The actress said,
"Well, I’ve made a whole story about her childhood and where she grew up, but I would be interested to see it onscreen. In my head, she’s from a very normal, very average, probably working-class family."
Bradley added,
"She’s really worked herself up the ranks and has kind of adopted this whole way of being that’s maybe not so much her. So, I’d like to see that explored. It’s a, “Let’s hear your real voice,” kind of thing."
The actress revealed that she had workshopped a story for her character's past, even if the Slow Horses script hasn't clearly revealed any such detail so far. Her character remains one of the more complicated ones in the show's recent past. So, exploring details from her childhood can help us better understand her overall nature and why she took this job in the first place.
