Before David Corenswet and Henry Cavill, it was Tom Welling who played Superman, albeit on the small screen in The WB’s Smallville. The show aired for 10 seasons between 2001 and 2011 and impressed the audience with the story of teenage Clark Kent as he came to terms with his superpowers before officially taking on the title of Man of Steel.

The series still enjoys a dedicated fan base. At a time when hype around Superman is at an all-time high, and when production houses are rebooting legacy shows left, right, and center, audiences were hoping that Smallville could also be revived for another season.

However, Tom Welling has now shared a disappointing update about the show’s future. During an appearance on his former co-star Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast, Welling said that a Smallville reboot might never happen.

Tom Welling recently had a conversation with Michael Rosenbaum on his podcast Inside of You. Rosenbaum co-starred with Welling in Smallville as Lex Luthor. During the interview, the topic of the show’s reboot came up, on which Welling said that though he loves the idea, series creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar may not revive the project. Rosenbaum asked:

“[Is it] too far-fetched that Al and Miles will ever say, ‘Let’s do a one episode thing, or a movie or something?”

To this, Welling replied:

“I’m smiling and saying it probably will never happen. But, like, I love the idea.”

The discussion has shattered the hopes of fans who wanted the show to return to television with a new season. Ever since DCU’s Superman starring David Corenswet has become a box office success, there has been renewed interest in Clark Kent’s story, which is why viewers were hoping that the Tom Welling-starrer series could be rebooted, since it explores the superhero’s origin story.

Welling and Rosenbaum were previously said to be in talks to create an animated version of Smallville. In October 2024, Welling had an interview with ScreenRant, where he revealed Warner Bros. and DC Studios had not greenlit the project:

“We need Warner Bros. and DC to let us do it. We've got Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar,] who are very busy doing a TV show called Wednesday. But they created Smallville, they want to write it. We just need to go ahead from DC and Warner Bros.”

Smallville premiered on The WB in 2001 and later aired on The CW. The early seasons of the show chronicled Clark Kent’s high school years as he forged a friendship with Lex Luthor. The two turned arch enemies as the seasons progressed, and the show then started introducing various DC heroes and villains.

Apart from Welling and Rosenbaum, the show starred Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang, John Schneider as Jonathan Kent, Annette O'Toole as Martha Kent, Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan, Sam Jones III as Pete Ross, Eric Johnson as Whitney Fordman, Erica Durance as Lois Lane, Aaron Ashmore as Jimmy Olsen, and Laura Vandervoort as Kara Zor-El.
