Smoke Season 2 has not been renewed yet, but the finale of season 1, which aired on August 15, 2025, left numerous important unanswered questions. The series tells the story of Dave Gudsen (Taron Egerton), an arson investigator, but it is also revealed to be an arsonist himself, who starts most of the fires that he ends up solving.
He is teamed with Detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) to catch two serial arsonists, but they find themselves in a bigger and more difficult situation when their crimes begin to catch up to them. While the series ended with Michelle arresting Dave, there are several questions left unanswered, making Smoke Season 2 a compulsory sequel to answer these questions.
Here are five burning questions that Smoke Season 2 needs to answer.
Smoke Season 2 needs to happen to answer these 5 burning questions from the Season 1 finale
1) Will Captain Pearson find out the real killer of Steven Burke?
In the penultimate Episode of Smoke Season 1, we learned that Michelle killed Steven Burke, with whom she was having an affair. However, by using her brother, Benji, Michelle successfully deleted the CCTV footage where she could be seen going into Burke’s house on the night of his murder.
Later, she framed Dave for the murder of Burke, which he did not commit. While Pearson wants to see Dave behind bars for killing his friend, Smoke Season 2 needs to show whether he will ever be able to find out about the real murderer.
2) Dawn and Ezra’s relationship
While it is a crime drama, Smoke has also shown some lighthearted moments, at the heart of which are Special Agent Dawn and Ezra. They played a key role in bringing Dave down by connecting him to the arson. However, there is a lot more to discover about the budding relationship between the opposites.
Smoke Season 2 needs to happen to explore more of the characters' relationship and how the contrasting personalities will manage if something starts between the two.
3) Will Benji blackmail Michelle?
Benji helped Michelle cover up her crime by making him delete the CCTC footage that would have made her a suspect in Burke’s murder. This helped her in framing Dave for the murder among his arson cases as well.
However, Benji also copied the footage for himself. In Smoke Season 2, it will be interesting to see how he will use it against Michelle, and it will create more problems for her, as she is also dealing with the guilt of killing Burke.
4) Who started the fire in the Lab?
While many fires Dave might have started in Umberland, this one was more technical and didn't look like something that Dave would have been able to start. In season 1, Michelle and Dave learned that the fire was not started by someone in the lab but remotely.
However, during the ignition, there was no one present in the lab. Therefore, it was done by someone who was outside and had to hack into the security system to start the fire in the lab. It couldn’t be Dave, meaning there might be another arsonist other than Dave, the D&C arsonist, who Smoke Season 2 can put some light on, along with the investigation.
5) Will Dave be imprisoned?
Smoke Season 2 needs to happen to reveal the fate of both Dave and Michelle. Dave might have been arrested, but the only thing that is pushing him closer to being charged is Captain Pearson’s drive to punish the killer of his friend.
However, if he learns that it is not Dave but Michelle, will he still push for Dave to be charged for his crimes? This is one of the most important burning questions that needs to be addressed in Season 2.
Therefore, Smoke Season 2 needs to happen so that we learn who the other arsonists are and whether Michelle and Dave would pay for their crimes or not.
