Keri Russell is back in action as Ambassador Kate Wyler in Netflix's The Diplomat Season 3, and the actress is as excited as ever to return to the critically acclaimed show. In an interview with The Backstage Experience, Russell is opening up on her return to the show, giving fans a peek into where the show is going to pick up and all the emotions it covers.
"Oh, it's okay. It's just so exciting every time. It really straddles that political drama, relationship drama, but also the hilarity and all the fun things I want it to be. That ending is crazy. We pick up exactly where that left off, and, of course, a lot of problems ensue. I mean, Allison Janney, becoming president, knowing what a flawed character she is, is exactly how we're starting. And it's just a great jumping-off point."
As Russell stated, The Diplomat Season 3 picks up immediately after the shocking events of Season 2, where President Rayburn's sudden death leaves a power vacuum in Washington. In the trailer, Russel's character is heard saying,
“A terribly flawed woman is now the president, and only we know just how flawed.”
With Grace Penn, played by Allison Janney, now in the Oval Office, Kate finds herself navigating a complex political landscape, balancing international diplomacy with domestic intrigue.
More details about The Diplomat Season 3
Kate Wyler's diplomatic life is about to get a lot more tense as The Diplomat Season 3 is all set to premiere in less than a week, and Russell is back as the ever-resilient ambassador navigating international intrigue, personal drama, and political chaos.
Talking about the new season during Netflix's Skip Intro podcast in November 2025, Russell teased the third addition to the show and said,
“We’re shooting some stuff already in Season 3 that involves big groups and lots of people, and we do tend to rehearse those [scenes. It’s such rapid-fire diplomatic speak that we make sure that everyone’s on the same page and knows what we’re actually talking about.”
Returning members in the cast include Rufus Sewell as Kate’s ambassador husband, Hal Wyler, Allison Janney as U.S. Vice President Grace Penn, David Gyasi as British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, Ali Ahn as London CIA Chief Eidra Park, Rory Kinnear as Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge, and Ato Essandoh as Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford.
Creator Debora Cahn promises a season that “flips the chessboard,” showing Kate living the nightmare and the freedom of getting exactly what she wants. The series continues to combine political drama, personal stakes, and razor-sharp humor, ensuring audiences are hooked from the first scene to the explosive season finale.
The Diplomat Season 3 will premiere on October 16, 2025, on Netflix.
