Tom Sturridge's Dream has been at the center of The Sandman, and according to showrunner Allan Heinberg, the show has exclusively focused on his story. Therefore, considering all the material in the original comics from which the show has been adapted, it was decided that the show would be wrapped up after two seasons:

"The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season. We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show."

And now, after the release of the second set of episodes for the final season, the time has come for the crew to bid adieu to the viewers. Sturridge took to the show's official X and uploaded a heartfelt video thanking fans for all the love and appreciation for the show:

"Hello everyone. I just wanted to say Thank You for watching the-I was gonna say last but-the only two season of The Sandman. It has been the great privilege of my life playing this part, and more than anything, sharing it with all of you. So, thank you very much."

Fans quickly took to the comment section and filled it with heartfelt messages full of appreciation for Sturridge's character on and the rest of the show as well. One fan beautifully expressed a sentiment that many have felt about the show:

Dream had written his death by granting Orpheus his wish of death, by spilling the family's blood. The act was performed out of his love for his son, as explained by Heinberg, but it led to the Kindly Ones wreaking havoc on his realm.

"Dream knows that in killing Orpheus, he himself will die. But he refuses to let his son suffer for one more moment. It’s less of a slow suicide, I think, than it is Dream’s showing up for his son in a way that he couldn’t have all those thousands of years ago, or even at the beginning of the series. When you love someone that much, you’re willing to lay your life down for them."

The Sandman Season 2 ended on a tragic yet liberating note with Sturridge's Morpheus carefully planning and executing his end, clearing the way for a new ruler of Dreaming, a much softer, adaptable, and empathetic Dream.
