Fans of Fire Country have a new show to binge on as its spinoff, Sheriff Country, premiered recently on CBS on October 17, 2025. Created by Matt Lopez, the police investigative drama show features Morena Baccarin, Matt Lauria, and others.
Sheriff Country revolves around Sheriff’s Deputy Mickey Fox (Baccarin), who must not only investigate the criminal activities happening in the small rural town of Edgewater, but also deal with her father, Wes (W. Earl Brown), who grows marijuana on the side, and her daughter Skye (Amanda Arcuri), who is dealing with sobriety.
Sheriff Country delves deeper into the world of Fire Country as Mickey is the stepsister of Sharon Leone (Diane Farr), from the original show. The pilot episode has already introduced plenty of twists and turns as Mickey’s daughter, Skye, discovers that her boyfriend is dead and has become a person of interest in the investigation.
In an interview with TV Insider, creator Matt Lopez talks about the upcoming investigation, how Mickey is affected by it, and how it sets the future episodes of the show for some complexity.
“There’s some great complications there,” Lopez remarks.
Creator of Sheriff Country, Matt Lopez, talks about Mickey’s role after her daughter is caught in a criminal investigation

Viewers of Sheriff Country know that the premiere episode of the show had plenty of dramatic moments from the get-go. While Mickey is busy trying to prove that she can be the next sheriff, she also learns that her ex-husband, Travis, is now dating her friend, Cassidy.
However, during the final moments of the episode, Mickey is caught in a conundrum as her daughter discovers her dead boyfriend and becomes a person of interest in the criminal investigation. As her mother, Mickey can no longer participate in the investigations, and that has left the viewers and Mickey on edge.
In an interview with TV Insider, creator Matt Lopez talks about how this twist will affect Mickey’s character. He mentions that what he loves about the show is that
“Mickey’s a character who straddles two worlds.”
What he means is that while on the one hand Mickey is the sheriff and abides by the law, her father is the total opposite and is a thorough criminal.
Lopez continues to explore this duality within Mickey’s daughter, Skye, who is a “Fox” according to the showrunner.
“She’s got some of grandpa, and she’s got some of Mickey,” he mentions.
Lopez also notes that there are some interesting twists and turns later on in the show where the viewers will be conflicted over whether Mickey should completely trust her daughter.
Ultimately, Lopez notes that he wanted to explore a character like Mickey, who is a sheriff and is unable to participate in a case where her daughter is a person of interest. Further, Sheriff Country also places Boone (Matt Lauria) as the person in charge of investigating the case, who is Mickey’s competitor. Therefore, all this will complicate things for Mickey’s character. “There’s some great complications there,” Lopez remarks.
Actress Morena Baccarin talks about her character Mickey in Sheriff Country

While Matt Lopez has given his views as the creator of the character of Mickey Fox, actress Morena Baccarin, who plays the character herself, also talks about her role in Sheriff Country in an interview with Collider.
Talking about the fact that Mickey’s father is a criminal but she is a sheriff, Baccarin notes that her character had to “grow up fast,” but Mickey has been doing her job for 20 years and is therefore “very experienced”. Further, the actress notes that Mickey and Skye “see the world differently” and Mickey has a “cop head”, which sometimes is an obstruction in her being a mom to her daughter.
Baccarin ultimately notes that what she loves about playing Mickey is that her character is not without faults, and that’s what “drew” her to the role. Even though Mickey is “very black and white”, she has “soft spots,” and she does not like that side of hers, Baccarin notes about Mickey. The actress remarks that it is important that “a leader, a woman with vulnerabilities” is showcased on screen.
