“Some time-sensitive stuff that we left hanging”: The Rookie creator talks about a possible time gap in Season 8

ABC’s The Rookie is heading into Season 8 with more urgency than ever, and not just because Monica is on the loose in Europe. Creator Alexi Hawley confirmed during San Diego Comic-Con that the new season won’t skip ahead by much, saying,

“Some time-sensitive stuff that we left hanging, that feels like we should [resolve soon] for the audience.”

That’s a clear nod to the messy fallout of the Season 7 finale, which ended with multiple dangling threads, from Monica’s immunity deal to Chenford’s almost-conversation and Oscar’s open case.

Hawley made it clear this season will pick up very close to where things left off, maybe not the next day, but not weeks or months later either. Fans won’t have to wait long in the story’s timeline to see Nolan chasing Monica through Prague, or to find out how the rest of the squad reacts to the unresolved chaos.

Hawley also added,

"I don’t think it’ll be months later. I think it’ll be fairly continuous — not literally next day, but within a fairly short amount of time."

The story is built around that ticking clock, and the creators don’t plan to waste it. Season 8 isn’t resetting the board; it’s doubling down on unfinished business.

Season 7 of The Rookie ended with more loose ends than most finales, and Season 8 is now expected to pick up several of them without delay. One of the biggest threads left dangling was Monica’s immunity deal. She didn’t just walk away; she flew out of the country.

And according to Nathan Fillion and Alexi Hawley, Season 8 opens with John Nolan in Prague, actively hunting her down. That premiere has already been filmed, and it’s not just Nolan going overseas. He’ll be joined by his wife Bailey, Nyla Harper, and Matt Garza, who’s crossing over from The Rookie: Feds. It’s not a one-man mission. It’s a continuation of everything Monica left behind.

Hawley confirmed there’s no big-time jump, and that’s a direct response to how Season 7 closed. Lucy and Tim had an almost-moment, with Tim suggesting they move in together—only for Lucy to fall asleep mid-conversation after pulling another exhausting night shift. Chenford fans have been waiting for that next step, and Hawley has already said that the conversation needs to actually happen. The audience wants resolution.

That also ties into the shift scheduling issue, which won’t drag on much longer. Lucy stuck on night shift while Tim works days isn't a sustainable story beat, and Hawley acknowledged that.

The romantic subplots aren’t the only thing Season 8 has to carry forward. Wesley Evers might be eyeing the District Attorney’s job now that his boss has pulled out. Hawley hinted at that angle, noting how Wesley has always cared about fixing what’s broken in the justice system.

Meanwhile, Officer Juarez and Rodge are trying to maintain a relationship while he tours as a musician. Hawley’s already confirmed they’re “adorable together” and he wants to keep them around, so that story’s not ending any time soon either.

Another subplot that hasn’t wrapped yet is Oscar’s disappearance. He slipped away in the Season 7 finale, and Hawley promised there would be some kind of resolution. The same goes for Seth Ridley, who reappeared with one arm and declared himself the new police chief. Whether or not he’s lying, Hawley said that something shocking had to happen to that character, and now they’re going to follow through on what comes next.

The show has also confirmed its core cast is all returning. There were questions about contract renewals after The Rookie Season 7, but Hawley shut those down back in the spring. Nathan Fillion, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Shawn Ashmore, Jenna Dewan, and Lisseth Chavez are all back. Deric Augustine has been bumped up to a series regular, continuing as rookie officer Miles Penn.

No new characters have been announced yet, but more casting news is expected before the January 2026 premiere. ABC is sticking with its midseason release plan, which lets it air 18 uninterrupted episodes. That format worked for Season 7 and will continue for The Rookie Season 8. There’s no reset here, just unfinished business finally being handled.
