Foundation Season 3 is off to an intense start with The Mule taking the center stage, and he is creating some powerful ripples. While Season 2 of the Apple TV+ series introduced the audience to the menacing mutant briefly, Season 3 finally brings forth the chaotic capabilities of The Mule. Pilou Asbæk, who portrays the role, shared that The Mule will be much more than just a regular villain and may leave a lasting impression on the audience.
While speaking about Foundation Season 3 to Collider, Asbæk said,
“I don’t think that’s very recognizable as a human being. I think us humans are tested daily. We’re forcing ourselves to be good in many different difficult situations daily. And you know what? Sometimes it’s nice to be a little bit evil.”
Foundation is a science fiction series that revolves around rebuilding human civilization as the galactic empire collapses. Psychohistory, developed by mathematical Hari Seldon (played by Jared Harris), is a new scientific discipline that can help predict the future. He is instrumental in creating the Foundation to uphold human civilization.
The series is based on Isaac Asimov’s novels with the same name. Foundation Season 3 premiered on Apple TV+ on July 11, 2025.
The Mule is the antagonist that the Foundation is forced to face this season. With the character in play, Asbæk quipped about an exciting Season 3. He said,
“Between you and me, and I’m not gonna spoil anything, you’re gonna be very happy with Episode 10. You’ll be like, ‘Okay, alright. That was wonderful'."
Role of The Mule in Foundation Season 3
The Mule is a mutant with powerful telepathic abilities. He is also referred to as the Warlord of Kalgan. He would take over planets by manipulating people’s emotions. He becomes an adversary to Seldon’s Foundation as he can undermine the psychohistory projections by using his powers.
The Mule first appeared in the Apple TV+ series Foundation Season 2 as a vision to Gaal Dornick (played by Lou Llobell). The vision showed him as a brutal being on a mission to bring destruction to the Foundation and kill Salvor Hardin (played by Leah Harvey). While Mikael Persbrandt played the role in Season 2, Pilou Asbæk took the reins in Season 3.
The Mule is determined to destroy the Foundation and create his own new empire. His character is the more deadly antagonist in Isaac Asimov’s novel series, whose goal is to knock down Seldon’s predictions.
