Netflix’s new comedy Son of a Donkey brings Aussie brothers Theo and Nathan Saidden back into the spotlight.

The duo created, wrote, and directed the entire series. If you know their viral sketches or loved Superwog, you will feel right at home here. This time, they are diving into the messiness of family, trying to break free and all the chaos that comes with growing up.

Son of a Donkey dropped worldwide on Netflix on October 30, 2025. It is a short, sharp run: just six episodes, all set in Melbourne. Princess Pictures and Vic Screen helped make it happen.

The story follows Theo, who moves out to chase some independence, only to run into real life. Suddenly, he finds himself dealing with legal trouble, odd jobs, family arguments, therapy sessions, and even online scams. The humor is quick, relatable, and full of that Australian edge.

If you are into shows like Superstore or Please Like Me, you will probably get a kick out of this one.

Here is a closer look at the cast and characters from Netflix’s Son of a Donkey, plus a bit about who they are:

Theo (Theodore Saidden): Theo is at the center of everything. He leaves the family home with every intention of becoming independent, yet the real world turns out to be too much for him to handle. He is always in trouble: avoiding penalties, being involved in fraud, getting into fights at work, and just trying to deal with his complicated relationships. None of this is easy, but at the same time, Theo starts to understand that no matter what his efforts to isolate himself are, family will always be the most important thing.

Johnny (Nathan Saidden): Johnny is not just Theo’s best friend; he is also his partner-in-crime, always ready to jump into whatever scheme Theo dreams up. Johnny brings a lot of heart and plenty of laughs, and the friendship between these two is at the core of Son of a Donkey. Nathan Saidden also pops up as other characters around Theo, adding even more layers to the show’s humor and emotional moments.

Grandma (Loraine Fabb): Grandma shows up again and again, and she is exactly what Theo needs: a steady, loving presence when everything else gets chaotic. She is the voice of reason and tradition, always ready with advice or just a warm meal. In a show full of wild twists, Grandma’s there to remind Theo, and everyone else, what really matters.

Police Officer 2 (Sara Ellis Holland) and Police Officer (Christopher Farrell): Both of them show up as the law, getting tangled up with Theo whenever he gets himself into trouble, which is pretty often. Fines, warnings, the usual, thanks to Theo’s wild choices or just plain bad luck.

Douchebag Dave (Toby Derrick): Dave is that guy you love to hate. He pops up in two episodes of Son of a Donkey, always ready to stir the pot and make life harder for Theo and Johnny. His obnoxious, loud-mouthed style is classic as he is the kind of character who walks in and instantly raises the tension, usually in a way that is more funny than threatening.

Brad the Built Man (Daniel Reader): Brad is the group’s muscle, the typical tough guy, but he definitely is not the smartest one. He always brings laughter to the place, most of the time at his own cost, and he makes Theo look even more like a loser. In short, Brad is there to stir the pot and also to provide some laughs during the tumult in Son of a Donkey.

Psychiatrist Phil (Matthew Crosby): Phil is the therapist Theo never wanted but definitely needs. He is quirky, a bit offbeat, and gets pulled into Theo’s mess more than he probably should. Through Phil, Son of a Donkey digs into what it means to grow up, deal with family drama, and try to get your life together, all while making you laugh. Phil brings warmth and a little wisdom, even when everything else seems to be falling apart.

Cosmetic Surgeon (Sotiris Tzelios): Tzelios pops up in Theo’s mother’s story in Son of a Donkey. This part brings a mix of comedy and real-life messiness as it digs into family drama and the obsession with looks. Theo’s mom tries out cosmetic surgery while juggling a rocky marriage, her husband’s health problems, and all the stress that comes with holding her family together.

Dad (Nathan Saidden): Nathan also steps into the role of Dad, Theo’s father, in Son of a Donkey, and he is right at the heart of the show’s tension. Dad is really an unpredictable person. One day, he is very mad, and the next day he is very silly. There is even a scene where he is looking for food in trash bins because they are short of money. The conflict between him and Theo gives a push to the plot. Their uphill relationship brings to the surface larger issues about family clutter and cultural identity.

Son of a Donkey has many other characters who help and support the main ones. Besides the main actors, you can see a few policemen who are not in the main police group. There are also Theo and Johnny’s friends, colleagues, and random people who appear sometimes.

Now and then, other family members show up, people besides Grandma and Dad, sometimes just for a scene or two. Plus, the show sprinkles in extra characters tied to specific episodes: folks from work, people at therapy sessions, or faces you would see in social settings.
