It is a wonderful moment to be a fan of Spartacus. The gladiator series that became a cult-favorite due to its high action, bloody battles, and gritty drama is back in the spotlight with the series Spartacus: House of Ashur. The new sequel series brings a fresh twist that sparks conversation among long-time fans.

The series revolves around Ashur, an intelligent and enterprising individual, and the ways he unexpectedly becomes the leader of a house of gladiators. In the meantime, its creator Steven S. DeKnight has openly expressed which recognizable faces of the original series he would've liked to revisit. And judging by his remarks, there is much reason that fans of a particular blond, sword-wielding warrior should be excited.

Which character Spartacus: House of Ashur creator Steven DeKnight would've liked to revive

In a shocking twist that will make fans thrilled, DeKnight revealed that he would like to resurrect Gannicus, the carefree champion of Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. Gannicus, with his charisma, self-confident manner and rapid swordsmanship, soon became one of the most popular characters of the Spartacus series.

DeKnight stated that he would like to revisit the story of Gannicus, possibly prior to Ashur’s demise, since the character was so well-liked and the actor who played Gannicus, Dustin Clare, left a huge impression on the series. It is not merely nostalgia but DeKnight displaying a lot of affection for what he has created.

In a pre-release interview with ScreenRant, Steven DeKnight stated:

“I’d love to go back before Ashur died and explore Gannicus. Because Dustin Clare is a fan favorite and I’d love to work with him again.”

He also explained why he couldn't focus on Gannicus or any other character’s comeback in Spartacus: House of Ashur,

“I was really focused on the Ashur character. I really love the idea of seeing a bad man try to be better.”

What this says about the franchise’s future

DeKnight’s remarks aren't mere daydreams but indicate that he is full of ideas about what can be done within the Spartacus universe. Although Spartacus: House of Ashur is set on an alternate timeline where Ashur lives on and eventually becomes powerful, the mere fact that he would've loved to bring back Gannicus is enough to indicate that the series can swerve in directions that no fan anticipated.

The series is taking a swing at something that’s in unknown territory, it’s a dare, it’s exciting, and it’s respectful of the past, but has something new. In the current age where series depend heavily on nostalgia, Spartacus definitely does not feel like it is reusing old ideas, instead, it is employing smart storytelling that keeps the franchise alive, loud, and full of action.

Fan buzz and what’s next

Needless to say, the news of DeKnight's desire to see the return of Gannicus has the Spartacus fanbase quite eager. Already, it seems that everyone is considering what ifs: what if Gannicus never actually left the gladiator life, or what if he had had an epic battle with Ashur?

Of course, none of these are actually confirmed just yet, but the fact that DeKnight is discussing the possibility is one way of saying that if the Spartacus universe is allowed to continue, there is definite potential there. For now, at least Spartacus: House of Ashur can be enjoyed by fans, with a small wish of a Gannicus-focused storyline somewhere, and really, that's something that we are all ready to see.
