The return of Nick E. Tarabay as Ashur is one of the greatest attractions of Spartacus: House of Ashur. In the original Spartacus, he was the conniving ex-gladiator whom everyone loved to hate. It is different now because Ashur returned as the Dominus of his own ludus, or practically the director of a school of gladiators. That in itself preconditions a very dramatic comeback.

Both new and familiar faces are standing next to him. Graham McTavish reappears as an old gladiator, Korris, who is now the most reliable trainer of Ashur. He is hard, faithful, and is likely the one who holds the warriors in check. Tenika Davis also takes part as Achillia, a fierce gladiatrix who wants to demonstrate her power in a world dominated predominantly by men. She brings intensity, power, and much personality to the arena.

There is also a big ensemble in Spartacus: House of Ashur: Jordi Webber plays Tarchon, Jamaica Vaughan plays Hilara, Ivana Baquero plays Messia, Claudia Black plays Cossutia, India Shaw-Smith plays Viridia, Jackson Gallagher plays Caesar, Jaime Slater plays Cornelia, and Leigh Gill plays Satyrus. The show poses a provocative question that begs to be answered: What if Ashur had not died on Mount Vesuvius? In this re-telling, Ashur is not met with his demise, but instead he is rewarded by the Romans for betraying Spartacus. His prize? Ruling over the same ludus that he served in as a slave.

However, power is not easy, not even for someone as smart as Ashur. Now that he holds power, he has to contend with exasperated gladiators, potentially lethal political rivals, and his own increasing imperiousness. Every choice that he makes may win him devotion or spark revolts.

Achillia, a ruthless female gladiator, is one of the strongest new characters in the story, who throws the whole arena into a splash. She is someone who makes things a little different, particularly in a world where it is all about power, ego, and survival.

Spartacus: House of Ashur is not a fight series, according to Starz; it is a mad, history-bending, roller-coaster of betrayal, alliances, passion, and lots of blood. The same unprocessed ferocity that made Spartacus legendary will be present, but with an entirely new and far more unpredictable leader in the spot: Ashur.
