Squid Game Season 3 is not for the weak of heart. A few minutes into the third season, we witness Gi-hun begging to be killed, and the rest of the episodes are no different when it comes to how intensely gripping and bloody they are. The horror and the bloodshed don't stop there, as we move into the first game for the season, and the fourth game for this batch of participants, a simple yet deadly game of Hide and Seek.
By the end of this game, the grandma, Geum-ja, makes it alive after committing an unforgivable act to protect Jun-hee and her newly born baby. However, unable to handle the burden of this unforgivable act, she hangs herself to her death. Here's everything that happened leading up to her death.
Squid Game Season 3: Why did Geum-ja kill herself
The first game that the participants had to play was Hide and Seek, where they were divided into groups of two. One of the groups has to hide from the other, each of whom has to kill one to survive, while looking for an exit. As fate would have it, Geum-ja and her son Yong-sik end up on opposite sides.

Yong-sik has to kill someone from the opposite team for his survival, whereas his mother teams up with Jun-hee and Hyun-ju to try and make it out of the game alive. To make things even more complicated, Jun-hee ends up going into labour during the game and gives birth to a baby girl.
The stakes are much higher now in Squid Game, as the three of them have to make it out of the maze safely along with a newborn. Things look up when Hyun-ju finds the exit and comes back to take all four of them through it. However, before she can get the grandma and the new mother to the exit, she is killed by Myung-gi.
Jun-hee and Geum-ja make it to the exit with the baby, however, just before they turn the knob and walk into safety, Yong-sik walks into the room with his knife. He has been unable to kill anybody in the game so far, and will be unable to survive this game in Squid Game Season 3 if he doesn't kill somebody.
He tells his mother to move to the side so that he can kill Jun-hee and stay alive at the end of the game. His mother pleads in front of him and tries to get him to stab her instead of Jun-hee so that she can make it out of the game alive, along with her baby, and Yong-sik can be alive as well.

Yong-sik refuses to kill his mother and, pushing her to the side, is a sliver away from attacking Jun-hee when Geum-ja, his mother, uses her hairpin to stab her own son in the back, killing him. A mother is forced to kill her own son to protect another mother and a newborn baby in Squid Game Season 3!
Geum-ja comes back to the dorm with the rest of the participants who made it out of the Hide and Seek maze alive, and even though she begs the participants to vote no before the next game, the majority of them vote yes, and the players move further in the game. That night, she asks Gi-hun to protect Jun-hee and her baby. The players find out in the morning that she had committed suicide, unable to handle the grief and pain of the loss of her son, and the fact that she was responsible for his death.
The mother-son duo's story comes to an end in Squid Game Season 3, but there's another mother and child duo that needs to make it out of the game alive.
