That becomes clear right away with Matt stepping into a bigger role this week. Matt takes on the challenge of helping a patient suffering from a rare type of narcolepsy that activates whenever he experiences strong emotions. Serena doesn’t understand why Matt is trying so hard and even calls him a“tryhard.” View this post on Instagram Instagram PostThis highlights her usual cynicism. But as the plot unfolds, she shows rare hints of warmth, revealing her softer side and why their chemistry is such a big plot point to look forward to in St. Denis Medical Season 2. We soon learn that the patient's emotional stress stems from his crush on his roommate, Jeff. Serena tries to help and encourages him to share his feelings. But while doing so, it becomes quite evident that she has feelings for Matt.Alex has a particularly difficult time this episode. We see her reunited with her mentor, Pam. At first, Pam looks like a great fit, especially since she manages to put Bruce in his place, something very few people can do. Seeing Bruce humbled after several episodes of boosting his own ego is a satisfying shift. But soon we see that Pam might not be a great person. Alex spends much of the episode excusing her mentor’s harsh behaviour, convincing herself that Pam simply wants everyone to improve.Eventually, Alex reaches a breaking point. Her anger toward Pam, an emotion we rarely see Alex express, shows how deeply she cares about her team. It also confirms why she is the right person to help the hospital thrive, even if it means confronting someone she once admired. Joyce and Ron become locked in a silly debate, which turns out to be less about Stevie Wonder and more about Joyce’s fear of death and her desire to be remembered. Despite the darker theme, the humour keeps the storyline light and adds balance to the episode. It reminds us that just because the show is a comedy doesn't mean the characters can't have very real, dark fears.By the end, St. Denis Medical Season 2 Episode 5 is an episode that touches every aspect that makes it a medical sitcom.
