Patrick Schwarzenegger, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver's son, recently spoke about the difficulties he experienced during casting for HBO's The White Lotus Season 3.
Even though everyone would presume that his renowned last name would grant him an advantage in securing roles, both Patrick and the producers of the show explained that his background discouraged the casting team.
As The White Lotus's producer, David Bernad explains, the creators were not interested in casting Patrick simply based on his surname, and indeed, his fame proved to be an obstacle.
Patrick, who appears as Saxon Ratliff on the show, has publicly complained about people assuming nepotism and has placed much emphasis on the amount of training and hard work that preceded his casting. In the end, it was his work and commitment that earned him the part, not his celebrity lineage.
This is one of the complications that actors with well-established families are exposed to, particularly in high-profile productions such as The White Lotus. Contrary to popular opinion, Patrick Schwarzenegger's case demonstrates that carrying a well-established surname sometimes proves to be a hindrance during the casting process because directors and producers fear claims of nepotism.
The casting process for The White Lotus: Reluctance and merit
Patrick Schwarzenegger did not have an easy time being cast in The White Lotus. Producer David Bernad explained that the group was reticent to consider him due to his well-known surname.

Bernad said,
"We didn't want to cast him because of that," about Patrick's heritage.
The casting director, Meredith Tucker, also said it was tough, particularly when trying to find actors for the Ratliff children, such as Patrick playing the role of Saxon. Despite these challenges, Patrick's audition was impressive. Bernad explained that Patrick was “just so good” that his performance overcame any reservations the team had about his background.
Patrick himself has continually spoken to the issue, explaining he is sensitive to public speculation that he secured the role due to his father, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
He has pointed to the years of drama school, character development, and repeated rejection he has endured throughout his career. Patrick starred in several films and television shows before securing this celebrity role, showing dedication to his work despite his family name.
Patrick Schwarzenegger's take on nepotism
Patrick Schwarzenegger has been open about wanting to be judged on his own merits and not his surname. During interviews, he has complained about being branded a "nepo baby," the nickname given to children of stars who venture into the acting world.
Patrick explained,
“I know there are people who’ll say I only got this role because of who my dad is. But what they don’t see is the decade I’ve spent honing my craft, the hours of dedication I’ve put into developing my characters, and the countless auditions I’ve faced rejection from.”
He also recognized the opportunity and privilege his childhood afforded but maintained that his achievement is the product of hard work. Patrick attributes both parents with teaching values of hard work and perseverance, pointing out that his mother, Maria Shriver, was hugely influential in his childhood.
Although there were times when he wished he did not have his celebrity last name, Patrick said he would not exchange his life or family for anything.
The White Lotus is available to watch on Max.
