Star Trek: Picard is one of the critically acclaimed Star Trek series to have come out in recent times. Created by Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Kirsten Beyer, and Alex Kurtzman, the show is a sci-fi series that continues to expand upon the famous Star Trek franchise.

Featuring Patrick Stewart, Michelle Hurd, Alison Pill, and others, Star Trek: Picard aired from 2020 to 2023 and focuses on retired Starfleet Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Stewart), who was last seen in Star Trek: Nemesis. The show takes place in the 24th century and has been noted for its visuals, plot, and characters.

Star Trek: Picard has many important characters, and one of them is Captain Liam Shaw, portrayed by actor Todd Stashwick. The character is the commander of the USS Titan-A, and even though Shaw is killed by Borg in the third season of the show, Stashwick mentions that his character can still make a comeback if the spinoff series, Star Trek: Legacy, gets made. More on the story below.

Fans of Star Trek: Picard have always wanted a spinoff of the series, and during the STLV: Trek to Vegas, Todd Stashwick and the showrunner of Star Trek: Picard, Terry Matalas, talk about what it will take to get Stashwick back as Shaw and how the character will be brought back in the spinoff.

The actor Todd Stashwick has made it clear that he will only return to play the character of Liam Shaw in the spinoff if the show is done right. And if the character of Shaw comes back in the spinoff, he will be an Emergency Engineering Hologram.

While answering TrekMovie, Stashwick quotes,

“I love workin’. I love the character of Shaw. I love the Star Trek universe, and I love all the people that… If someone chooses to greenlight this project, and fills it with all the people that the Legacy show would have: Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, Ed Speleers, Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut, Mica Burton, I would love to work with those people. If that means appearing as a hologram, and it contributes to my health and pension, I’m there."

Therefore, the actor has made it clear that he will reprise his role of Liam Shaw in the spinoff only if all the characters from Star Trek: Picard are present and would not mind appearing as a hologram.

Even though showrunner Terry Matalas wants to continue the story of Star Trek: Picard through his dubbed spinoff Star Trek: Legacy, the show is not under development, as the showrunner stated during the STLV: Trek to Vegas via TrekMovie.

However, during an earlier panel, actress Michelle Hurd had mentioned that Matalas had written a 30-page outline for Star Trek: Legacy, and when asked about this at the STLV, Matalas was initially surprised, but he eventually mentioned that,

“There was a moment in which I was pretty inspired, in which I just sort of spit out 30 pages over a couple of weeks, not for anybody necessarily to see, just in case one day it happened. I knew what the first 20 minutes of it were.”

Matalas also revealed that, while he cannot discuss details at the moment, he can confirm that the Klingon Empire will play a role. During the panel, Matalas and Stashwick additionally mentioned that the character Liam Shaw could appear as a hologram in the spinoff, should it come to fruition.

When asked about the Skydance and Paramount merger and how it can change things for the upcoming spinoff, Matalas notes that

“it's going to be up to the fans”

as Star Trek has always been loved by its avid followers, and if Legacy has to happen, then the viewers can “make it happen.”
