Early in 2026, the highly anticipated American science fiction drama series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will premiere on Paramount+. Set in the 32nd century, the show was developed by Gaia Violo and chronicles the preparation of the first new class of Starfleet cadets in almost a century as they become officers.
The show, which focuses on the cadets' growth aboard the spacecraft USS Athena, resumes after a significant incident in the Star Trek universe. Karim Diané, Sandro Rosta, and Holly Hunter are among the cast members. A second season is presently in the planning stages, with production taking place in Toronto from August 2024 to February 2025.
The events of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy take place in the 32nd century after a major disaster called The Burn. As they train aboard the USS Athena and battle real-world threats while reestablishing the Federation in a fragmented, post-Burn planet, the show follows the first new Starfleet cadets in almost 120 years.
More about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
In contrast to the majority of other Star Trek series, the program is set in the 32nd century. This is a very distant future. Alex Kurtzman is the co-showrunner and executive producer. Recently, he gave an explanation of why the story is set in this far-off era and what it means for the show and its characters.
The timeline created in later seasons of Star Trek: Discovery is maintained in the 32nd century setting. Kurtzman underlined the significance of Starfleet Academy's departure from earlier Star Trek initiatives. Set in the 32nd century, the series gives viewers the opportunity to learn about novel ideas and difficulties inside the Star Trek universe. Because of the new time period, the show may have its own unique taste while yet being connected to the larger series.
One of the main reasons for choosing the 32nd century in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is the impact of a massive disaster called "The Burn." The United Federation of Planets was severely damaged by the Burn. After this incident, trust in institutions and governments declined, shattering and dividing the Federation. The Federation is now putting a lot of effort into rebuilding Starfleet Academy. As they prepare to become Starfleet officers during this challenging period, the plot follows the first new class of cadets to be accepted in 120 years.
Given that the narrative is about young people dealing with issues left by earlier generations, Kurtzman said that it felt very relevant today.
Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, and Kerrice Brooks, who portray the cadets, are the new cast members. Former Star Trek character The Doctor, Robert Picardo is currently an Academy lecturer. His manner serves as a link between the beloved original Star Trek fiction and the present series.
Kurtzman also looked at the opening credits of the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. He said,
"They were great and distinct, but familiar enough to make you feel like a member of the Star Trek family."
Filming for the first season took place in Toronto, Canada. The fact that season two production has already started shows how confident the crew is in the show's future and popularity.
