Star Trek has become even more connected to its origins. As Star Trek: Strange New Worlds enters its fifth and final season, two of the most famous characters are officially joining the cast: Dr. Leonard McCoy, or, as he is better known, Bones, and Hikaru Sulu.

They do not simply make brief appearances. They assist in closing the gap between The Original Series and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and reveal where these beloved Starfleet officers are just before the beginning of Kirk’s era. The famous characters of DeForest Kelley and George Takei will be played by new actors to carry on the tradition of the roles, as was done in the reboot films.

As usual, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is paying tribute to decades of Trek history and still creating its unique, thrilling story amongst the stars.

Bones joins the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds crew

The entry of Dr. Leonard McCoy, a.k.a. Bones, is one of the most anticipated moments from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Bones has always been among the most popular characters in Star Trek, who is not only a lifesaving surgeon but also memorable for his unique one-liners.

Thomas Jane will portray Bones in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. He is the actor who has all the gravitas and charm needed to make the legendary doctor come alive. He will presumably appear only in the last episode of the season, but it will be a significant milestone.

The introduction of McCoy is a clever move for the narrative. It ties Pike’s Enterprise to the crew that viewers of the Original Series are familiar with and indicates that the timeframe will focus on James T. Kirk’s era. It is a transition that respects the past while gently setting up what comes next.

Sulu at the helm

If Bones is the heart of the Star Trek finale, Hikaru Sulu feels like its soul. A key part of The Original Series bridge crew, Sulu became a pop-culture icon, thanks to George Takei's original performance and John Cho's modern reboot version.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds now introduces a new Sulu, played by Kai Murakami in his TV debut. The casting balances legacy with fresh energy, giving the character space to grow while honoring his place in Trek history.

Similar to the case of Bones, Sulu makes his appearance in the final episode, where the Enterprise has reached a turning point, closer to Kirk's era. It is a quiet, meaningful tribute to the future and to the past, which seems like a classic Star Trek storytelling move.

What this means for the final chapter

It is not just a fan service to bring McCoy and Sulu onboard, but it is also an obvious storytelling choice. Following four seasons of galaxy travel, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 5 is now squarely linking its prequel narrative to the upcoming events in Star Trek's history. The showrunners have indicated that they wish to take the series all the way to James T. Kirk's first day of becoming the captain of the Enterprise, and these iconic characters assist in making that transition seem natural.

The last season is not long and consists of only six episodes, but it is targeting big. It closes the key storylines of characters like Pike, Spock, and Uhura, and gradually brings in the crew of the original 1960s series that the fans are well familiar with.

It is a nostalgic moment for the longtime Trekkies. To the new audiences, it is easy to see how Strange New Worlds fits into the larger Star Trek universe. And to all the others, it is another reason to look forward to one last voyage into the final frontier.
