Even as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds prepares to wrap up with its fifth season, it doesn’t look like the mission is over for the USS Enterprise crew — at least not if the showrunners have anything to say about it. Creators Henry Alonso Myers and Akiva Goldsman are already thinking about what comes next, and they’ve got their sights set firmly on the Original Series era — that sweet spot of Trek history where the Enterprise was just starting to become legendary.

While they’re not spelling anything out just yet, the signs are all there. Legacy characters like Spock, Uhura, and even a young James T. Kirk have already made their entrances, and it’s clear the show is inching ever closer to the TOS timeline. The message between the lines? Strange New Worlds might be ending, but this version of the crew could be just getting started.

If there’s more story to tell from this era, and clearly there is, then the Enterprise won’t be powering down anytime soon.

The Old Guard is back — but with a fresh perspective

Part of what’s made Star Trek: Strange New Worlds such a standout is its careful balancing act: honoring the legacy of classic Trek while making space for new interpretations. We’ve already seen strong reimaginings of Spock (Ethan Peck), Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush), and Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and even glimpses of Scotty and Kirk — each addition slowly building out the bridge crew we know and love.

The pacing of these reveals feels deliberate, almost like the show has been laying the foundation for something more. By the time Season 5 concludes, most of the classic roster could be assembled. And that opens up a tantalizing possibility: a new series set between Strange New Worlds and The Original Series, diving into missions we’ve never seen but have always imagined.

Goldsman has already hinted that the creative team is “very interested” in telling stories from Kirk’s Enterprise that haven’t yet been explored. And with the Star Trek franchise’s 60th anniversary landing in 2026, the opportunity to launch a new chapter in the timeline couldn’t come at a better moment.

Instead of rebooting TOS outright — a move that would risk alienating longtime fans — this continuation would build on the trust Strange New Worlds has already earned. It’s not just nostalgia driving the interest; it’s the rare chance to bridge two iconic eras of science fiction with a cast that’s already won people over.

So, while Strange New Worlds might be taking its final bow, don’t be surprised if the lights on the bridge stay on just a little longer.
