Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a successor of Star Trek: Discovery and according to actor Wilson Cruz, who was on the show, a musical episode was first promised to the predecessor and not Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The musical episode was titled, “Subspace Rhapsody”, and was Season 2’s 9th Episode.

Talking to STLV: Trek to Vegas, Wilson Cruz spoke with his co-star Anthony Rapp in attendance, in a panel moderated by Trek Movie’s Laurie Ulster and expressed his views honestly. “Here’s what I’m gonna say about it...someone says, ‘Well, what do you guys think about having a musical episode?’ And we’re like, ‘Of course! That would be amazing.’ So for the whole season, we’re like, ‘Next season, it is going to happen, right?’ Didn’t happen season 2…season 3, right?’ Nope. Was it during season 4? It was either—season 4 was shooting [or] season 4, after we had aired, and they announced this, and…I love them, but I was SO ENRAGED by that. And they did a fine job. It was fun. But I was mad.”

The actor was therefore annoyed yet amused that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds got a musical, even though Star Trek: Discovery was about to get it first. According to Screen Rant, the reason why Cruz’s show did not get a musical is because there were many creative changes during the show aired. Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg left after the first season and their successor, Alex Kurtzman, also left soon after. Further, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has musically talented cast members like Rebecca Romijn and Christian Chong, which might be a major reason why the musical was shifted to the next show in the franchise.

In an interview with Trek Movie, the cast of the show also talked about their Season 3 character arcs. Rebecca Romijn talks about how her character, Number One, is the glue holding everything together this season. The actor also mentions that viewers will get to see her character in command and what kind of a captain she can be. On the other hand, Christina Chong talks about her character La’an. She states that she has to make sure that La’an is in sync with the emotional needs of the scenes and delivers them well. Finally, Jess Bush talks about her character Chapel in Season 3 and mentions that her character is afraid of commitment and that makes her a complicated character. In Season 3, Chapel will continue to stay independent, even though Spock and her have different needs.
