A brand-new Outlander prequel spin-off, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, is set to mark its entry into the franchise on August 8 on Starz. Interestingly, the prequel has already been renewed for its second season, ahead of the release of the first season.
An official trailer was released for the upcoming prequel, and a brand-new title sequence was also unveiled for the show. The title sequence has been an integral part of the franchise, and the creators wanted to incorporate a newness into the prequel’s title sequence while ensuring it remembers its roots. Outlander: Blood of My Blood effectively striked a balance between the new and the old.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood's title sequence juxtaposes the new and the old
Outlander: Blood of My Blood premieres on Starz on August 8, and the official description for the prequel reads as such:
"follows the romance between Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), and Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine). From the battlefields of World War I to the rugged Highlands of 18th century Scotland, two fated couples must defy the forces that seek to tear them apart, unfolding in surprising and unforeseen ways."
Outlander has been an invaluable success when it comes to viewership and fans, and much of it is due to the unforgettable characters and immersive storylines. An aspect of the original show that has been an important tether for the fans’ love is the title sequence. The title sequence for the original series was an adaptation of the Scottish folk tune, The Skye Boat Song.
The upcoming prequel aimed to honor the original series while charting its unique course on unexplored territory, so it makes sense that they’ve chosen to create a new title sequence.
Bear McCreary, the composer for the Outlander title sequence, works his magic yet again as he composes the new title sequence for Outlander: Blood of My Blood. It has the same feel as the original sequence but manages to deliver its own spin. Even though the music—an evocative masterpiece, to say the least—was composed, it was the visuals that seemed to present some trouble for the creatives. It was further explained by Matthew B. Roberts, showrunner and executive producer,
”It wasn’t quite gelling, and it wasn’t working visually. We couldn’t figure out how to tell the main title story. It felt like a travelogue. It didn’t feel like the show."
Nevertheless, the post-production team discovered an inspired flow in a particular shot, and soon enough, the entire visual sequence came together, explained Roberts:
"That moment became the inspiration for the whole title, and we started looking at those pieces to create this dance that would tell both sides of the story of Henry and Julia, and Brian and Ellen. That’s what got the ball rolling."
The team’s inspiration produced visually stunning moments. These visuals chronicle the parallel romances that mesh together into a nostalgic yet energetic title sequence for Outlander: Blood of My Blood. The chilling perfection of Julie Fowlis’ vocals in both English and Gaelic, combined with the visuals, creates a powerful impact. It’s a strong indicator of the emotional depth and care behind the prequel.
