Steven Universe returns: Prime Video greenlights a sequel to the hit animated series

Steven Universe is officially expanding once more, and fans are thrilled. The new series was recently greenlit by Prime Video as an animated series. This was announced at Annecy International Animation Film Festival, and the creators will be Rebecca Sugar, the original creator of Steven Universe, and Ian Jones-Quartey, the supervising director on the original series. Cartoon Network will be the studio behind the creation.

As the title suggests, this sequel series will focus on Lars Barriga, a fan-favourite supporting character from the original show. During Steven Universe, the character underwent a major transformation from a grumpy doughnut shop worker to a pink-skinned spacefaring hero with a lion-like resurrection ability. The original Steven Universe aired from 2013 to 2019, followed by a movie and Steven Universe Future, which ended in 2020. The spin-off series, though created by Cartoon Network, will feature on Prime Video.

In Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars, the storyline will likely explore Lars's continuing adventures in space and his role as the captain of the off-colour crew. Fans can also expect some cameos from other beloved characters in the Steven Universe world. The series is also expected to explore the impact of Lars' resurrection and space exploits.

It is the first official continuation since Steven Universe Future ended in 2020. Fans have indeed long wanted to see more of Lar's journey, especially after he became a space rebel. Lars in the upcoming show is now a full-fledged space outlaw and the captain of a private crew that is likely to the off-colour only. The series will explore post-Empire galactic politics, hinting at darker and deeper Gem lore. One can expect some smuggling missions, space chases, and moral complexities as Lars walks amidst the line of being a hero and a rogue.

Given the setup, Lars of the Stars might lean more into sci-fi adventure and action, possibly with a bit of a space western or rebellious outlaw tone. Still, with Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey involved, one can expect some emotional themes and humour, possibly with some musical elements, along with the character growth of Lars and his crewmates.
