Apple TV+'s Stick tracks the emotionally complex journey of Pryce Cahill, a former golf prodigy who's trying to make a personal comeback, and Santi, a young golfer who is carrying the burden of possibility. Confronted with redemption, mentorship, and ambition in a sports comedy-drama structure, the show employs the physical locations it inhabits to reflect both the internalized demons of its characters as well as the harsh realities of the external world.

The entirety of Stick was shot on location in British Columbia, Canada, a province well known for its natural beauty, production facilities, and diverse urban landscapes. From rolling greens to suburban streets and professional soundstages, British Columbia provides the entire range of locations required to recreate the story, without having to go any further than the province.

British Columbia – The Single Filming Location

British Columbia (BC), a developing center for regional and global television productions, served as the location for the entire filming of Stick. The province's diverse terrain, which includes rivers, forests, mountains, and energetic cities, offered the show the ideal balance of comfort and visual spectacle. Whether in shooting introspective emotional scenes or high-energy sports action, the series' cinematography takes full advantage of the natural and man-made landscapes that are plentiful throughout BC.

Primary neighborhoods and cities used in Stick

Numerous cities and suburban towns throughout BC were used as backdrops:

North Vancouver: Prominently used throughout the series, North Vancouver's close proximity to the coast and mountains provided a sense of calm and tension. The more relaxed, personal aspects of the characters' lives were frequently filmed in their residential neighborhoods.

Richmond, Langley, Pitt Meadows, Surrey, New Westminster, Maple Ridge, and Vancouver each location contributed something special to the shoot. Langley and Maple Ridge provided a more muted, suburban character, while Richmond and Surrey gave us a glimpse of city streets. Vancouver, with its variety of architecture and easily identifiable skyline, gave us a mix of exterior location shots that needed a contemporary, vibrant background.

These varied locations provided the series with an extensive scope, but retained production within a relatively small geographic location.

Studio filming at North Shore Studios

For interior environments that needed controlled spaces—houses, offices, locker rooms, and clubhouses—production at North Shore Studios in North Vancouver was brought into play. The full-service production facility provided the creative team with consistent lighting, acoustics, and set construction. Studio filming was instrumental in making feasible the characterization elements of Stick by providing lived-in, warm, and narratively appropriate environments.

Golf course filming locations

Since the series incorporated such a dominant golf element, it was crucial to utilize actual, functional golf courses in order to maintain authenticity. Many golf courses in British Columbia were used throughout the season. The sites served not only to provide a sporting ambiance but also to present an ongoing visual motif— sweeping expanses of green where characters wrestle with personal and competitive issues alike.

The juxtaposition of the peaceful beauty of the golf course with the internal conflict of the characters enriched the visual storytelling of the show. Golf in Stick is not just a game—it's the venue where character failures, successes, and moments of realization occur.

Why British Columbia was chosen

British Columbia was a great location to shoot for several reasons:

Varied Location Opportunities: BC presents a broad range of varied locations, from busy downtowns to rural suburban settings, forests, and coastlines—each of which is within close proximity to one another.

Robust Film Infrastructure: The province boasts highly professional film crews, adequately equipped studios, and a robust production support infrastructure in place.

Natural Splendor: BC's unadorned beauty cannot be disputed. Its topography offers inherent production value and can be reshaped to double as many other locations across the globe without geographically dispersing.

Long-lasting impressions

Stick roots its character-driven sports narrative in a rich and versatile world. Shooting entirely on location in British Columbia gave the production the freedom to build an integrated and authentic world that adds depth to the emotional trajectory of its characters. From sweeping fairways and book-ending mountains on the streets to intimate, interior rooms, every setting has a purpose within the story.

With its arsenal of actual towns, golf courses, and professional studio lots, Stick grounds its narrative in worlds that are experienced, inhabited, and real.
