Stick, the sports comedy series starring Owen Wilson, was released on Apple TV+ on June 4, 2025, and has released six episodes so far. The show follows Pryce Cahill, who was once a great professional golfer but, due to an unfortunate turn of events, is now a golf coach. As Apple TV+ states, the show is about,
Pryce Cahill(Owen Wilson) was headed for golf greatness when an on-course meltdown derailed his career. Now struggling to stay afloat, he goes all in to mentor Santi-a teenage phenom with immense potential--and maybe save himself.
While Stick looked promising with Owen Wilson and Marc Maron in lead roles, many viewers were disappointed after watching the show. Many pro golfers or viewers who are well-versed with the sport think the show isn't up to the mark.
Stick starring Owen Wilson, has not landed well with pro golfers
As The Hollywood Reporter states, a Reddit user (@PrettyFlyGuy05), who plays golf and is quite passionate about the sport, wrote about Stick in a golf community named,
I wanted to believe that you were wrong about Stick.
He said,
“But you were right. It is a very bad show. Other than Owen Wilson, all of the characters are incredibly unlikable, there are so many little details that are unrealistic, and the whole thing feels rushed. I had higher expectations for this show because Apple has a good track record and I am a big Ted Lasso fan, but this whole show is way too pretentious. Why is it so hard to make a good TV show about golf?''
He was not the only one disappointed. The most voted comment on this post states,
''It’s not the greatest show in the world but I was casually enjoying … that is until the fucking Zero character started taking over the show. She was mild enough in ep 3 and hoped she had a one episode arc. Nope, back in ep 4 and now with more talking. Now she’s the fucking caddy. Viewership going to fall off a cliff.'' - @naked_short
The Reddit user by the username @PrettyFlyGuy05 is a twenty-seven-year-old man named Axton B, who has a government job and lives in Florida. When The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Axton, who plays to an 18 handicap, he said that the character Zero,
“took a unremarkable show and made it much less fun to watch.”
There are many comments by users with similar emotions about the Owen Wilson show. One Reddit user (@WakeAndTake21) commented,
''I enjoy the show, but there are a lot of moments that will make golf nerds roll their eyes. Episode 3 spoiler below:
Shooting -8 on the back 9 to win the tournament is a bit unrealistic but doable for a prodigal talent playing a nondescript amateur event. But having the winning shot be a 100 yard approach shot that he holes out for birdie(?!) is an absurd choice lol if you’re gonna have him win with a birdie, just have it be a putt. Or at least show why he’s hitting for birdie from 100 yards away''
Moreover, Axton also told The Hollywood Reporter that most of the users who commented on his post,
“would agree that Stick is at the very best a mediocre show,” and that “most of those would go on to say that they dislike the show.”
He also said,
''Those that defend the show wouldn’t even say that they are wild about it, but enjoy it more casually because there aren’t any other shows made specifically for golfers at the moment,”
While the show has a comedic genius like Owen Wilson, it lacked genuineness when it came to portraying golf. Speaking from his experience playing the sport, Axton also told The Hollywood Reporter,
“In one scene where they are practicing on a simulator, you can see that there is an avatar that is copying the golfers movements,”
“As someone with a lot of experience with simulators, I have never seen that in real life.”
The first six episodes of Stick are streaming on Apple TV+.
