The finale of Stranger Things is packed with goodbyes and emotional closure but one scene might have dropped a big hint about the franchise's possible future. With the last episode airing, our heroes of Hawkins have all gotten the endings they deserve and as they settle into their new fresh lives, one couple might be looking forward to a possible spin-off of the show, and it's Joyce Byers and Jim Hopper .
In the epilogue, Hopper and Joyce finally get a moment of peace as they sit at Enzo’s talk about what comes next, and Hopper casually mentions a job offer in Montauk as a police chief. On the surface, it plays like a fresh start for two people who have earned one. But for longtime fans, that word lands with weight.
Montauk was the original location where the show was supposed to be set. The Duffer Brothers have already talked about how they added that little detail in there for superfans who would remember this little detail. On the other hand, it could be so much more than just an Easter Egg. Montauk could be the start of a new premise for the franchise, in a city that is known for it's conspiracies and mysterious theories.
How Montauk could be Stranger Things' future

The name Montauk pulls directly from the real life Montauk Project conspiracy, which claims the U.S. government ran secret experiments in Montauk, New York involving psychological warfare, mind control, time travel, and even extraterrestrial research. Those ideas quietly shaped Stranger Things, even if they were heavily fictionalized.
As the show progressed, its mythology grew messier before narrowing almost entirely around Vecna. A Montauk centered spin off could reset the tone, making it darker, grittier and more intimate. The Duffers’ original Montauk concept was meant to be found footage of horror, brutal and unsettling. That approach could offer the franchise a sharper, scarier second life.
The Duffer Brothers have confirmed a spin off is officially happening, even if details are still locked down tight. What we do know is that it will not follow the Hawkins crew. They both have frequently talked about spin-offs to the show, the latest of which is an interview with ScreenRant where Matt Duffer stated,
“We tried as much as possible to answer all the questions as it relates to the characters and mythology of Hawkins in the Upside Down. We’re really closing the door and all that. And the spinoff, it relates in some ways, but it really is a completely different story and a completely different location with completely different actors and characters. So it’s its own. It’s really its own entity.“
As of yet, more details are awaited, but we do know that the Duffers' creativity and brilliance is far from over. For now, head over to Netflix to watch the fifth and final season of the show and see how it concludes five years worth of story into a clean, satisfying end.
