Not many Stranger Things fans guessed how inexplicably interwoven the boy Will Byers was going to become with the Upside Down when he mysteriously disappeared. Currently, with the series set for its fifth and final season, the new allegations seem to suggest that the missing child turned out most likely to be the hero after all. Ironically, this hints that he might unknowingly face the so-called final antagonist earlier, right at the beginning.

The show tried its best to obscure hints towards the obvious for Will's revelation, which had inexcusably been hidden in front of our eyes from the very start. While taking into consideration all theoretical possibilities, season 5 promises a showcase of indescribably horrifying yet stunning new creatures, most likely featuring a dragon-like beast as Will's story to finish.

Not simply fuel for the theory fire, a small yet crucial instance that happened in Season 1 might have stealthily planned out how the conclusion would play out. Will the Wise, a name that may have held a promise even years ago, is the focal point of it all.

An old and new Stranger Things monster foreshadowed in fantasy

The greatest location to conceal a twist is right in plain sight. In the last episode of Stranger Things Season 1, following Will’s rescue from The Upside Down, the boys once again find solace in battling another foe, this time through their Dungeons & Dragons campaign. In this particular session, they are faced with a powerful creature they must overcome, known as the thessalhydra, and surely, they manage to defeat it.

To the majority of audience members, it was an otaku’s wish fulfillment. However, the name of this creature haunts fan theories ever since, particularly when DnD-inspired content surged in season 4 alongside other clues suggesting much older, deadlier forces lay trapped within the Upside Down.

A three-headed dragon painting given by Will, bizarrely furious sounds that can never be visualized, and foreboding glimpses all lead to the conclusion that the thessalhydra is indeed real and on its way.

This monster, unlike the Demogorgon or Mind Flayer, hasn’t quite taken center stage yet, but the indicators are becoming increasingly bold. A dragon-like roar in Season 5, as well as Will’s scream of “Run!” strongly hints that something much larger than Vecna is waiting in the shadows.

Will Byers: From lost boy to final hero

In the series, Will has shouldered a silent weight. He has been tormented, possessed, and marginalized, which has profoundly altered him since his time in the Upside Down. While other characters confront creatures out in the open, Will's battle has always been more subdued- spiritual, mental, and intimate. This simmering character development might be aiming toward an eventual climactic change.

The Duffer Brothers have confirmed that Will will be “a central focus” in the final season, and, logically, it fits. The Upside Down changed all its clocks the day he went MIA. His memories live on, and so do his visions. Eerie, I know. But if the thessalhydra truly exists, then it follows that Will will be the only one who possesses the tether—or the ability—to extinguish it.

The notion of "Will the Wise" stepping forth isn't only a metaphor; it has merit. While battles are won in plain sight and with a bombastic flair for the public to see, Will’s journey has been serene, self-reflective, and profoundly relatable. In Season 5, we might witness him come to terms with his true purpose—not simply a pawn of the Upside Down, but the force that shatters it.

A fitting end to the story that began with him

If the theory holds, and the thessalhydra is indeed the final monster, then the show’s climax has already been written. What started in a basement with imagined adventures may culminate with Will confronting and fighting the monster he once bested in a fantasy. This time, however, it’s real.

That doesn’t just serve to satisfy plot progression— that is a bold statement to make. Stranger Things has always dealt with the theme of childhood meeting cosmic horror, growing up under overwhelming pressures, or bravery found in unexpected places. Will Byers used to be known as the shy one with a crayon crown. In the end, he just might be the one who gets to wear it.
