This Stranger Things season 5 episode 7 recap explores how the group reunites and discovers the truth about the Upside Down and its connection to an even more dangerous realm. The penultimate episode of Stranger Things season 5 delivers unexpected revelations, manipulations, and near-death escapes.
Max wakes from her coma and reunites with Lucas in an emotional sequence, but there is less time to celebrate as Holly Wheeler stays in grave danger.
The episode also features Will's most impactful moment in the entire show as he gathers his loved ones to share an intimate secret he carried for years. His vulnerable confession brings the group closer during their troubling time. Meanwhile, Dustin makes a significant discovery at Hawkins Lab that alters everything they thought they knew about the supernatural being.
Max wakes up and reunites with Lucas and the group
The episode opens with Lucas calling out to the unconscious Max, who wakes but is unable to move. Max informs Lucas that she saw Lucas waiting for her and had heard him playing her favourite music to get her back. However, the song was not what brought her back, but it was Lucas who was her reason for escape.
Max, Karen, and others meet Max in a lighthearted sequence. However, Max soon informs them that Vecna is now angry and that Holly remains in danger.
Holly's dangerous journey through other realms
Max explains that she instructed Holly to head to the Wheeler home, expecting her to find her way from the Upside Down. Unfortunately, Holly does not appear there as expected. Instead, she wakes up trapped inside the wall along with other kidnapped kids and Dere.
Holly's escape attempt fails, bringing her very close to Nancy as she realizes she is inside Vecna's mind. The group in the Upside Down rushes to the roof just in time to see Holly floating in midair, but Vecna pulls her away from them.
The wormhole secret that changes everything
Let us get into Dustin's significant discovery. He gathers everyone at the Squawk to share his revelations about the Upside Down's true nature. Dustin explains that they have always assumed that space was another dimension that Brenner accidentally opened. The reality is more difficult than expected.
The Upside Down is actually an interdimensional bridge that splits through time and space. Scientists refer to this as a wormhole, held together by exotic matter positioned above the lab. This wormhole connects Hawkins to the Abyss, a realm filled with pure evil and chaos.
The Abyss is the true home of the vines, the Mind Flayer, and the Demogorgons, and every monster they encountered. When Eleven made remote contact with the Abyss during Brenner's experiments, it resulted in the formation of the wormhole. Henry and his family have been using this bridge to cross into Hawkins since then.
Comprehending Henry's plan to merge the two worlds
Will explains why Henry targets the young kids. Their minds are more easily molded compared to those of adults. Henry used Will to amplify his supernatural powers and intends to do the same with the captive kids. Max remembers Holly saying Henry mentioned to the kids they would help him draw the worlds together. Will realizes Henry has been creating rifts to break both realms and merge them. When the Abyss and Hawkins collide, they will merge into one so that Henry can make an entirely new world.
The team orchestrates a plan to defeat Vecna
After much chaotic discussion, Steve gets a strong idea: the Squawk radio tower can serve as their path to the Abyss. They will let Vecna go with this plan and draw the worlds closer, waiting for when they come too close. When the tower pokes through a rift, Eleven will enter Vecna's mind and attack from within.
Nancy adds to the idea and suggests using the sensory deprivation bath at Hawkins Lab. Max offers to guide Eleven through Henry's mind since she was trapped there, and Kali insists on joining. Dustin adds the last step to the plan and suggests they will plant a bomb near the exotic matter. When it explodes, the bridge will fall apart and destroy the Abyss forever.
Will's secrets bring the team closer
Wills confesses to Joyce that Vecna used his deepest secret to make Will weak, and to win this battle, he must reveal it. Will decides to ask everyone else to stay to listen to his deepest secret.
As the group gathers, Will speaks with vulnerability, tears welling up in his eyes. He confesses he is different from them in an unexpected way. Will admits he does not like girls like his friends do. He reveals he has a crush on someone, but it is not about them that he fears.
Vecna showed him a future where he ends up alone, and Will breaks down as he tells this. That is when Joyce steps up and promises he will never be alone, and so do the other group members. They embrace him with warmth, showing his truth does not change their affection for him. At last, Will tells Eleven he's ready to face Vecna in the physical realm with her.
Henry starts the ritual to merge worlds
Back at the creel house, Holly is attacked by the kids due to Henry's manipulation. Derek fails to help her as Henry threatens to kill his family. In the final moments, Mr. Whatsit places a lit candle as the kids sit around a table.
He asks everyone to join hands, including a reluctant Derek and Holly. Their head shoot backward, and their eyes turn upside down. Henry starts his merging process, and the clock starts ticking.
