In the past four seasons, she mostly appeared only in family gatherings and related scenes. Her character wasn't involved in the Upside Down plot and had little to do. Therefore, when season 5 suddenly made her the central character, many viewers found it difficult to recall who Holly really was.

In season 5, part 1, Holly becomes a major plot catalyst after being targeted by the demogorgon. This incident forces her family, especially Nancy and Mike, into a much darker and more personal emotional arc.

This is what the creators of Stranger Things have to say about Holly Wheeler's fate

While speaking with Screenrant and The Hollywood Reporter, the Duffer brothers explained that Holly was never intended to be a major character, while her potential arc was a late discovery. Her storyline suddenly became too significant while writing season 5 when they explored ways to escalate some emotional stakes. The kids were the main reason all of the old seasons were emotionally charged, but now those kids have grown older.

“As we were working on season five, we talked a lot about wanting to recapture some of the spirit of the first season. They’re old now, so we had to find an actual child to bring into the show.” Matt Duffer told THR.

Stranger Things' creator added how Holly's character added some fresh emotional vulnerability and a new family dynamic. Her abduction made the consequences of the Upside Down feel more real, making the season more dark and personal.

Holly is young and innocent and is also untouched by supernatural elements. Moreover, she is connected with primary characters like Nancy and Mike, while also bringing transformation in Ted and Karen's character arcs. Her presence represented the last piece of Hawkins' normal life, and her abduction shattered that. What happened with her bow sets up the new rule that anybody can be taken away.

Therefore, we can say that Holly's disappearance in Stranger Things echoed similar incidents that happened in season 1 with Will Byers and Barb Holland. Her kidnapping deeply affects Nancy and Mike, making them pursue the case more desperately. Moreover, the enemy is rising powerful than ever as the threat has become random and indiscriminate.
