Stranger Things Season 5 has been building up for an entire decade, and the first volume packed enough surprises to make the three-year wait for the new season worth everything and more.

One of the biggest surprises in the season was that while Eleven and the entire gang were looking for Henry Creel, aka Vecna, in the Upside Down, he was targeting another victim.

This victim was not just anyone; it was the youngest member of the family, Holly Wheeler. The audience and the entire Hawkins gang were surprised by this and spent a lot of time wondering why Vecna chose Holly as his victim, but a decade-old scene from Stranger Things Season 1 is proof that Holly has always been an integral part of this equation and that Vecna's first victim was actually Will Byers.

Stranger Things Season 5 is not the first time that Holly Wheeler has interacted with a Demogorgon

The second episode of Stranger Things Season 5 finds the Wheeler family attacked by a Demogorgon, whose sole intention was to kidnap Holly Wheeler. Just before the Demogorgon makes its way into the Hawkins dimension, the lights and games in Holly's room start flashing rapidly.

Lights being affected in Hawkins in the presence of some activity or movement in the Upside Down has been a major part of the Stranger Things lore. The alphabet made out of Christmas lights was initially the only way Joyce was able to communicate with Will, who was trapped in the Upside Down.

The flashing lights in Holly's room in Season 5 call back to a decade-old interaction of the youngest Wheeler with a similar occurrence. In the first season of Stranger Things, when Holly is only three years old, she accompanies her mother, Nancy, to the Byers' house to see Joyce after Will's disappearance. This is also when Joyce had put up lights all around the house in case Will tried to communicate with her.

The youngest Wheeler noticed twinkling lights and followed them into Will's room, while her mother was busy consoling Joyce. Holly makes her way to a corner in Will's room, and a Demogorgon seems to try and make its way through the wall. This was the toddler's first interaction with a Demogorgon, just before Joyce came inside the room and asked Nancy to take Holly and leave.

While Holly was saved by Joyce's interruption in Season 1, even Nancy and Ted's attempts to protect their daughter from the Demogorgon were not enough to save Holly in Stranger Things Season 5. By the end of the first volume, Holly is still stuck in Vecna's mindscape, albeit accompanied by Max, so only time will tell if she'll make it out safe and sound.

While Holly Wheeler being the centerpiece in Stranger Things Season 5 was a surprise for fans, this reveal was somewhat clear due to the recasting of Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler and the incomplete title for the second episode being The Vanishing of...

Nevertheless, a decade-old interaction between the toddler and the creature has finally come to fruition in the final season. Even if this wasn't planned from the very start by the Duffer brothers, the twist did manage to find a poetic existence.
