The second part of Stranger Things Season 5, the final entry in the Duffer Brothers' sci-fi saga, finally dropped on Netflix on Christmas. The latest episodes explored the aftermath of Will's transformation in the previous volume, shocking truths about the Upside Down and Vecna's world domination endgame with his 12 vessels.

However, amidst the usual Demogorgon chase and the Upside Down chaos, Episode 6 featured an emotional moment between Nancy and Jonathan, the beloved couple who were caught in a near-death experience, with a melting substance literally filling the Upside Down's lab, they were stuck in.

Long-time fans of Jonathan and Nancy would be disheartened to learn that the couple officially split ways in Stranger Things Season 5, with a bittersweet un-proposal. After Nancy agrees that the couple's relationship started with 'trauma bonding,' Jonathan agrees that he continued to hold onto it because it made him feel 'safe'. After a string of emotional confessions, the couple mutually parted ways, while reiterating their love.

For fans who are still holding hope for the couple, the Duffer Brothers have officially confirmed the fate of Nancy and Jonathan's relationship in an interview with People Magazine, saying:

"That's a breakup. They are broken up."

More on Nancy and Jonathan's relationship in Stranger Things Season 5 in our story.

Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2: Unpacking Jonathan and Nancy's un-proposal

As it turns out, a near-death experience was the only truth serum Nancy and Jonathan needed to confront and address the problems in their relationship. Stranger Things Season 5 Episode 6 gave a surprisingly quiet and reflective moment to the lovers when they were trapped inside the Upside Down's Hawkins lab, with paint-like goo filling the room. As the world was literally ending around them, Nancy and Jonathan took a moment to reflect on their relationship, concluding that they should part ways.

Stranger Things Season 5 Part 1 hinted at the couple's increasing distance after Jonathan did not apply to Emerson and Nancy stayed back during Spring break to make some-needed space in their relationship. After going in circles for most of Episode 5, the couple finally laid everything bare. Their exchange began with lighter confessions, Nancy admitting she hates The Clash and Jonathan revealing he dislikes reading her articles, before giving way to far more intimate and heartbreaking truths. The couple finally came to a tragic conclusion; their relationship is not bound by love but 'shared trauma.'

While Jonathan questioned Nancy about whether she picked Steve over him, this was not true. After many near-death experiences, Nancy finally realized that it was never about Steve or Jonathan, but about picking herself. In an emotional moment from Stranger Things Season 5 Episode 6, the couple mutually decides to part ways, with Jonathan finally presenting her with Jack Coltrane's cassette and the hidden ring inside.

While Jonathan brought the ring, thinking it would fix their relationship problems, he asked Nancy to 'un-marry him' in an emotional 'un-proposal'. The couple hugs it out as Jonathan says:

''I tried to convince myself that this [ring] would somehow fix everything. But it was just gonna make things worse. Which is why it has been sitting like a cannonball in my pocket from the last two days. So what do you say? Do you accept my un-proposal?''

To this, Nancy replies:

''I accept your un-proposal.''

Stranger Things Season 5 finally concludes Nancy and Jonathan's un-proposal as they confess their love for one another. Love that is still there but not enough to sustain this relationship anymore.

In an interview with People Magazine, the Duffer Brothers revealed that the couple needed to break up before Stranger Things Season 5 wrapped up to give a befitting conclusion to Nancy's arc. After spending the entirety of the show stuck between Steve and Jonathan, she finally chooses herself, which symbolizes her growth over the seasons:

''The writers — all felt that Nancy needed to end up on her own and be independent and have an opportunity to find herself. I mean, how many people wind up with their girlfriend or boyfriend that they met in high school? Nancy and Jonathan have a little bit more of a complicated relationship than normal high schoolers."

While Nancy and Jonathan mutually parted ways, it remains to be seen what the finale has in store for them.

Tune into the Stranger Things Season 5 finale on December 31.
