In Stranger Things Season 5, the Duffer Brothers have answered some of the show's greatest mysteries after years of monsters, teen drama, and Upside Down horrors: "What is the Upside Down, truly?" and "Why was Will taken?"

The new trailer provides a chilling preview of everything that is yet to come: Vecna, stronger and scarier than before, is back and, in one crucial moment, speaks to Will directly, throwing the fans into a frenzy of speculation.

The Duffer Brothers reported in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that this final season would serve as a final closure to Will’s story. It implies that the questions, which began with his disappearance in Stranger Things Season 1 will finally be answered. The stakes will be greater, the Upside Down will be explored more thoroughly, and viewers will experience tons of heartfelt emotions as Hawkins confronts the last and darkest battle.

What the Duffer Brothers said about Will's character arc in Stranger Things Season 5

From the very first episode, the disappearance of Will Byers initiated everything in Hawkins. The Duffer Brothers have now confirmed that Stranger Things Season 5 will place Will back into the limelight as the boy who disappeared and was intimately involved with the Upside Down and Vecna. In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Ross Duffer stated:

“Because the story really began with Will and his disappearance, it felt, in order to go full circle, it needed to really end with him in so many ways. In the last couple seasons, we hadn’t really centered much of the show on Will. So there was so much to explore with him from a character perspective and plot perspective.”

One of the most outrageous scenes in the trailer is when Vecna picks Will and tells him, “You are going to help me… one… last… time.” This implies that Will is not only an emotional figure, but may actually possess some special knowledge, a connection, or even some powers that Vecna wishes to exploit.

The creators also pointed out that some of the events in Season 2, such as the one where Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer, were actually an early indicator of this plot. It means that Stranger Things Season 5 is not modifying the past but is finally finishing a story that started a long time ago.

What did the Duffer Brothers have to say about Vecna and the Upside Down

Among the things the Duffer Brothers have promised, the most thrilling is that the Upside Down mystery will finally be cleared up in Stranger Things Season 5. So far, it has resembled a black, malevolent variant of Hawkins: somber, threatening, and inhabited by exotic monsters.

However, this time the makers assure us that we will know why it exists, why it is related to our world, and whether it is a real place, a living thing or an experiment gone wrong. As we get a larger picture of this mysterious world, it appears that the military will have a large part to play, and some scenes are set within a militarized Upside Down. Ross Duffer revealed to Entertainment Weekly:

“These gates have opened up. We have a full military present in Hawkins and it’s under quarantine. I will say, of course the military is doing stuff in the Upside Down, but it really is a mystery to our characters and the audience for the beginning of the show.”

Matt Duffer added,

“A lot of the season takes place in the Upside Down. If I have to look at one more visual effects shot, I don’t know what I’m gonna do. We will never make anything else with floating anything. Snow, spores, ash, I’m done with all that.”

The Stranger Things Season 5 trailer is more intense and dark. Vecna is here, more powerful and more real than ever. Hawkins is heavily locked down by the military, and the core group of friends are separated, and each of them attempts to figure out how to retaliate.

About Vecna’s story in Stranger Things Season 5, Matt Duffer says:

“We wanted him to be scarier. So much of season 4, he was attacking you within the mind. One of the differences this season is he’s also attacking in the real world. Because of that, we needed to take his abilities to a new level.”

Ross Duffer further added,

“He’s lost what remained of his human body and has become more a part of the Upside Down. If there is any humanity left within him, it’s diminished.”

Stranger Things Season 5 is meant to solve some of the long-running mysteries and provide high-stakes character drama, and all in all, the Duffer Brothers are promising that the emotional payoff will do justice to the journey yet will shock the viewers.
