The fifth season of the show will follow the main group, who are seeking Vecna after the Rifts open in Hawkins. On the other hand, Eleven is being chased by the military and as Will Byers' disappearance circles one year, everyone gets theor amp up to fight the terror lurking in Hawkins.

The official synopsis of the season reads,

“Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding. As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time.”

How is Season Five going to be different from the previous seasons?

Stranger Things Season Five is not just the final season, it will also be the most terrifying season in more ways than one, as our main characters battle an opponent that has only gotten deadlier over the years. Another aspect is that there's less space for normalcy in this season. You won't get to have a glimpse at the characters' normal lives that are unaffected by danger in Hawkins. The plot delves straight into it as Vecna's wrath is overpowering their lives, and consuming every bit of normalcy.

Talking about this, director and co-creator Ross Duffer has told Tudum.

“I think what's unique about this season is that it starts a little bit in chaos because our heroes ultimately lost at the end of Season 4. We usually set up their normal life and how they’re going about school, and then we introduce the supernatural element. But in this case, this season is sprinting from the start.”

How did Stranger Things Season Four end?

Stranger Things Season 4 drops you right back into 1986, where everything in Hawkins is spiraling again while the teens juggle school, friendship drama, and a terrifying new enemy. Eleven is in California without her powers, dealing with relentless bullying, while Mike, Will, Jonathan, and Argyle end up on a chaotic road trip in a Surfer Boy Pizza van after the military ambushes the Byers’ house. Joyce receives a disturbing package from Russia that hints Hopper has survived, which pulls her and Murray into a rescue mission that lands them inside a Soviet prison filled with Demogorgons and Mind Flayer particles.

Back home, a monstrous figure the kids name Vecna begins murdering teens by exploiting their deepest fears. Chrissy, Fred, and Patrick are the first to die, and Max becomes the next target, barely escaping after her friends blast her favorite song. Nancy and Robin uncover Vecna’s ties to Henry Creel, while Eleven regains her powers through traumatic memories and learns she accidentally created the creature.

The season ends with Max in a coma, Eddie dead, Hopper reunited with his family, and Hawkins shattered after Vecna opens the fourth gate. The Upside Down finally leaks into town, signaling that the real war is about to begin.

All the previous seasons of Stranger Things are available to stream on Netflix.
