Stranger Things star Joe Keery, who plays the ever-charming Steve Harrington, recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to celebrate the recent release of Volume 1 of the show's final season.
The Duffer Brothers-created sci-fi supernatural saga, which debuted in 2016 on Netflix, took over the Internet by storm and eventually transformed into a Global hit. After almost a decade, the show is gearing up for its fifth and final season release, which will follow the Hawkins gang's showdown and final adventure with the evil Vecna.
Joe Keery, who has portrayed Steve Harrington since the very first season of Stranger Things, looked back on his character’s evolution and acknowledged how the series has been a major turning point in his rise to fame as an actor.
When host Jimmy Fallon asked him about his experience of shooting for Season 5, Keery expressed his gratitude for the crew and behind-the-scenes members, who helped shape this Global phenomenon. He said:
''Someone at the wrap said there were 8,000 people that worked on this show. So, you know, the actors are the thing...You associate the actors with the show and with the characters, obviously, but it truly is just a testament to the massive group of people that put their lives into this thing.''
Stranger Things star Joe Keery reflects on Steve Harrington's journey
Stranger Things needs no introduction today. The show that started as a must-watch summer title back in 2016 has transformed into an International hit today, paying homage to iconic 80s shows and redefining the horror genre for the current generation. While the success has been overwhelming for the creators and the cast alike, Joe Keery's Steve Harrington especially became a fan favorite character.
Showcasing that a good redemption arc is always timeless, Steve Harrington transformed from a high-school jerk into the unofficial “babysitter-in-chief,” all while building a heartwarming bond with Dustin and the rest of the Hawkins crew over four seasons of Stranger Things.
In Season 3, Steve took a part-time job at the Scoops Ahoy in the recently built mall, where he befriends Robin (Maya Hawke), who also becomes a core character this season. Steve's Scoops Ahoy sequence not only brought some comic relief into the narrative but his iconic sailor's costume became a fan-favorite for Halloween.
Keery discussed the costume's popularity on the Internet with Jimmy Fallon, even revealing how he recently wore it to his friends' Halloween-themed wedding. Lastly, Keery sums up Steve Harrington's evolution and growth in Stranger Things as:
''The thing I loved about the character is that he kind of has a change of heart and realizes the error in his ways.''
He added:
''The show is about a group of outcasts that come together and, um, you can be from all walks of life, but I just love that the character kind of makes that choice. And for that reason, it was just a real pleasure to play for 10 years.''
Like Keery, Stranger Things fans are also happy that Steve had a change of heart and developed a beautiful bond with Dustin over the years, even protecting the children from Vecna in the Upside Down.
Stranger Things Season 5 Part 2 will arrive on Netflix on December 25.
