The Stranger Things universe continues to expand over multiple avenues as the original one inches towards its end with the fifth and final season. The original TV series has now expanded into novels, comics, graphic novels, and even a prequel stage play. The most recent addition to the different formats is the Virtual Reality experience, Stranger Things: Catalyst.

This virtual reality experience offers fans a physical and social chance for fans to engage in the world with a group of friends as they fight a bunch of creatures in the Upside Down under the guidance of our very own Matthew Modine's Dr. Brenner.

In a recent conversation with ScreenRant, Matthew Modine revealed how playing this character in the VR format was a different experience from doing so on Stranger Things. Keep reading to find out more.

The VR experience Stranger Things: Catalyst finds players embodying some of Dr. Brenner, aka Papa's, test subjects. The players sit through his various experiments, some of them even in the Rainbow Room, where everything went down, and the experience even finds them being transported into the Upside Down, where they have to use their telekinetic powers to fight the multitude of creatures, from Demodogs to Demobats and Demogorgons.

During these experiences in the Upside Down, Matthew Modine's Dr. Brenner himself guides the players. Even though the doctor has his own ulterior motives behind helping the players, this version of Dr. Brenner is a huge shift from the one we've seen on the sci-fi series.

On the Netflix show, Dr. Brenner was a calculating and manipulative individual who used the children and their powers. His cold and calculating nature even led to Henry Creel, aka One, deciding to escape the Hawkins National Laboratory by killing all of the other test subjects. Matthew Modine was an antagonistic character in Season 1 and was presumed dead until his return in Season 4, where he helped Eleven regain her lost powers.

In a recent conversation with ScreenRant, Modine expressed how it was a completely different experience in Stranger Things: Catalysts to play this version of Dr. Brenner, who, despite his ulterior motives, was nurturing and guiding his test subjects, aka the players, through dangerous situations.

"You sense he’s steering you through the danger, and I was excited to show more of that nurturing side to his character and give fans the chance to explore the legacy he created for themselves."

It is quite poetic in a way how the Stranger Things: Catalysts release coincides with the beginning of the end for the original show. Nevertheless, this Virtual Reality experience is a way to understand an aspect of Dr. Brenner's character that remains untapped as of now. While Dr. Brenner died in Season 4 of the show, after he chose to help Eleven in his last moments, his legacy lives on in a way with this VR experience.
