Sullivan's Crossing recently premiered its season 3 episode 1 on 14 May 2025, which showcases Maggie Sullivan, a high-achieving neurosurgeon from Boston, now in her hometown, dealing with the aftermath of the diner fire tragedy.
Maggie's hometown is a remote but beautiful refuge where her estranged father, Harry ‘Sully’ Sullivan, runs a rustic general store and campground. This homecoming initially upsets her, but eventually takes her on a journey of self-discovery.
Sullivan's Crossing Season 3 Episode 1 perfectly sets up the characters and what has changed in their lives after the tragedy, especially Maggie. It suggests that Maggie is grieving, however, she ends up fanning some old relationships and lingering feelings.

In season 3, Cal returns from survival training and stops by the restaurant to ask Maggie about her move. She admits she’s overwhelmed by unpacking, and he offers to help. This suggests some deep feelings still lingering between the two. Maggie's willingness to let him into her personal space shows that she is opening up.
During training, Cal and Rafe talk about Connie Boyle. Rafe has now become an interim fire chief and admits that he is missing time with Sydney. Rafe is trying to be responsible, but is also affected by his personal life.
In episode 1, Maggie gets a flashback in which she sees a couple with a baby check into the lodge while the baby drops a plastic fire truck. This drop becomes a trigger for Maggie, reminding her of her unresolved loss or trauma. When she is still unpacking, her father checks in. They attempt to talk about some mundane issues like Cal and Maggie's unpacked stuff.
On the other hand, Sydney chats briefly with her brother Rob about the new diner and then mentions she saw Jane recently. But Rob doesn’t show much interest despite Sydney's nudge. Rob has become emotionally detached or has some unresolved issues with Jane.

Further in the episode, Maggie visits Cal for lunch, and he gifts her a necklace. They share a kiss, but Maggie stops in the middle after getting emotional. Maggie is somehow trying to move on, but is also stuck in her past.
A small mishap occurs when a guest, Helen, arrives, but her cabin isn’t available because Sully didn’t log her booking in the system. This suggests Sully's issue that he is old and can't keep up with the new systems.
The tension further peaks in Sullivan's Crossing when Rob tells his contractor he wants to start work as soon as the insurance money clears. But the contractor warns he won’t wait because a new development could pull his crew away. This puts Rob into tension as he lost the diner, and the dream of rebuilding is also not taking shape.
Sully’s pride and discomfort with change are on full display in episode 1, season 3 of Sullivan's Crossing, while Maggie, when she pushes Cal away, has a vivid memory of her miscarriage. Later, she opens up to Frank and breaks down.
