Sullivan's Crossing season 3 finale poses a great challenge for Edna. The MRI depicts that the tumour is pressing on Edna's carotid artery, which is a crucial vessel to the brain, making her condition dangerous and uncomfortable. The surgery might cause some complications, like she could lose her ability to think and communicate properly. While Edna spiralled on the thought that she could never be her true self again, post-surgery, not having the surgery altogether could cost her vision permanently.

Maggie finds herself in a difficult position as she is a family member and also a surgeon. She talks about this with Cal and expresses how she doesn't have the time and space for emotions, as she is the only neurosurgeon here in the Crossing. As a doctor, she further suggests to Edna that she should give surgery a shot.

People in Sullivan's Crossing are showing support for Edna. Cal thanks Edna for giving him a home and purpose in Sullivan’s Crossing. Sully brings chocolates and reminds her she has been his rock, someone who saved him when he was at his lowest. They ensure her they are with her regardless of her decision regarding her life.

Maggie doesn't answer them properly, but Cal is worried and ends up asking her if she is considering Chicago. Maggie insists that she was just being polite over the call, but Cal doesn't seem convinced. Cal accuses her of not thinking about what she would need to give up for moving back to the Crossing, and that she still misses her career. Maggie shuts down the conversation and walks away.

Maggie later confides in her dad about the argument, who simply expresses that he doesn't want her to have the same regrets as his. Adding to the already deepened wound, Cal finds and reads an old letter Maggie had written to her "summer fling", Liam, expressing that her career should come before any relationship. He decides to confront her with it while Maggie says that she isn't that person anymore. Cal insists that he couldn't be the one holding her back:

“Can you promise me you’ll never regret turning your back on your career? If you can do that, I’ll stay,” Cal asks Maggie at last.

Maggie can’t answer. So Cal walks out. Later, Maggie tells Frank that she does miss her career, while Frank advises her to quiet her mind and listen to her heart, and only it can direct her in the right direction.
