Superstar, the Spanish Netflix miniseries, is based loosely on the life of pop icon Yurena, played by Ingrid García-Jonsson. It blends real-life moments with fictional ones to tell the story of the rise to fame.

The finale ends with a surreal face-off between Yurena and her alternate self, Marimar, which explores the themes of identity, regret, and redemption in an unexpected way.

Superstar ending in detail

The end of Superstar explores Marimar, Yurena’s alternate version of reality, who never became famous. Her journey began years earlier when she was supposed to perform at a small venue called El Portazo. But after the place burned down, her dreams ended as well. Her mother, Margarita, encouraged her to have a safe, stable life instead. Marimar took up a desk job and married a much older man named Igor. She gave up on music entirely.

Near the end of her life, Margarita revealed that she could have supported Marimar’s music career, but she chose not to due to the fear that the music industry would expose her daughter to dangerous people. Marimar didn’t lash out and stayed calm as Margarita passed away, full of regret.

While cleaning out her mother’s flat, Marimar discovered a mysterious portal to another version of her life, the one where she had become Yurena. At first, she only visited, but soon she decided to stay longer, lying to Igor about going to see her cousins while really stepping into the world of her more famous self.

Simultaneously, Yurena crossed into Marimar’s quiet world, but this switch wasn’t literal. Superstar often uses fantasy to depict one's emotions. Yurena, who had hit rock bottom, longed for a peaceful life away from the spotlight. Her visit to Marimar’s life was her way of mentally escaping the pressure and disappointment of fame.

As Marimar explored Yurena’s world, she realized how little she knew about what Yurena had endured. She faked memory loss so her manager, Gregorio, could catch her up. He showed her a documentary stitched together with real and unbelievable moments from Yurena’s life.

Determined to bring back Yurena’s spark, Marimar met Leonardo Dantes, the songwriter Yurena once worked with. They had fallen out badly, but Marimar hoped they could work together again. Leonardo, however, hesitated. He was haunted by a strange shadow figure, likely Dantes, his alter ego. Though Leonardo had once accepted this side of himself, it seemed like his old fears were coming back.

Leonardo refused to collaborate with Yurena (actually Marimar). Marimar respected his decision and decided to move forward on her own. She relaunched Yurena’s career successfully, performing again, and received a positive response.

Next, she ran into Carmela, who praised Margarita’s support in Yurena’s journey. But that wasn’t Marimar’s experience; her version of Margarita had held her back. This stark difference made her realize that Yurena may have forgotten how much her own mother had sacrificed for her success.

Marimar returned through the portal and found Yurena. She urged her to go back to her own life and continue her career. Yurena initially resisted, feeling that she had failed her mother. But Marimar reminded her that while her mother died with regrets, Yurena’s mother did not. That convinced Yurena to return to her world and give a powerful performance.

Superstar ends on a strange and emotional note. There are a few unanswered questions at the end, like why Yurena and Marimar did not merge into one like Leonardo and Dantes did. Why did Yurena take the same underground path her mother did in Episode 1? The show doesn’t give answers to these questions but leaves them open-ended.

Superstar ends on the message that running from one's past doesn't help. There is something to learn from the past. It also leaves us with the message that fear shouldn't be why we give up our dreams.
