The police procedural from CBS, S.W.A.T., might have premiered in 2017 with its first season, but it has a much longer history, which dates all the way back to 1975. It first premiered as a procedural, then as a feature film, before returning to its original format in 2017.

The show was originally cancelled after its sixth season, but owing to public demand, it was renewed again, but this time it only lasted two seasons before being cancelled, and this time for good. Nevertheless, the show aired its final season from October 18 weekly, with the series finale, which aired on March 21, 2025.

All the seasons from 1 through 7 are available on Netflix, and after September 15, the eighth and final season will also be available to stream on the network.

S.W.A.T. fans can soon binge the entire series on Netflix when the eighth and final season of the show joins the rest of the seven seasons on the streamer on September 15.

The police procedural has had a rocky history with CBS since the Season 6 cancellation, after which Shemar Moore, who plays Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson on the show, took to his socials and ranted about the show's cancellation making no sense, saying:

"We’ve done nothing wrong. We did everything that was asked for."

Add to that the very loud and very demanding outcry from the public, and the show was renewed for the seventh and what was said to be the final season at the time. However, after the seventh season, it was renewed yet again for another season. However, by the end of the eighth season, S.W.A.T. was cancelled for good after the finale aired in March.

Nevertheless, even though S.W.A.T. won't be returning for a ninth season, this is not the last time we'll see some of these characters. The show might've been cancelled, but a spinoff has been ordered by CBS.

S.W.A.T. Exiles is based around Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, played by Shemar Moore, and even though he is the only one who is confirmed to be a part of the project for now, there is a chance that some of the former characters from the original show could also end up on the spinoff.

The Sony Pictures Television Chairman, Keith LeGoy, said this about the possibility of more characters returning to the spinoff:

"There is a S.W.A.T. family and that family is important. We would love to have other family members involved in some way, whether it’s all of them all of the time, some of them some of the time, or something in between. That’s something that we are still figuring out."

According to Moore, the spinoff is set to be an even bigger and better version of the original show; it would be as if the original show was "on steroids," he said. He acknowledged the difficulties the new TV spinoff might face, considering it doesn't have an anchor broadcaster at the moment, in a statement on his Instagram:

"Nobody likes change. I understand that. I get it 100%. But without change, you can't grow. You can't win without taking your lumps…. It ain't easy making it in the game of Hollywood. It ain't. TV shows don't last eight years anymore."

Crime procedurals are one of the most bet-on projects for TV networks, if Law & Order and NCIS are any example. So, even though there is a lot of risk for the spinoff, there is a huge chance that this procedural will follow a similar path, not unlike the shows mentioned above.

For now, however, we get to look forward to binge-watching through the entire S.W.A.T. catalogue after the eighth season is available on Netflix from September 15.
