Sweetpea, the Sky Atlantic British dark comedy-drama created by Kirstie Swain, was first released on October 10, 2024, and renewed for a second season in December 2024. As the cast and crew gear up for the upcoming season, new characters of the show have been cast, and one of them is an Overcompensating star.
As Deadline reports, Rish Shah, who played Miles in the Prime Video show Overcompensating, has been cast in Sweetpea season two, which has started filming.
Overcompensating star cast in Sweetpea season two
Rish Shah gained quite the praise for his performance in Overcompensating. Overcompensating, as Prime Video describes it, is
... a college-set ensemble comedy about the chaotic journey of Benny (Skinner), a closeted former football player and homecoming king, as he becomes fast friends with Carmen, an outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs. Deeply funny and personal, the show explores the lengths to which we all overcompensate while finding out who we really are.
Rish Shah plays Miles in Overcompensating, Benny Scanlon's friend and romantic interest. Shah is also known for playing Kamran in Ms. Marvel (2022) and Jay Farrow in Obsession (2023). Now, he has been cast as Gabriel, Rhiannon’s (played by Ella Purnell) romantic interest.
He is not the only new cast member joining the second season of Sweetpea. Tamsin Greig is joining as Liv, AJ's mother, Taj Atwal as Freya, and Jenny Walser as Daisy. The returning cast includes Ella Purnell as Rhiannon, Alexandra Dowling as Seren, Jon Pointing as Craig, Jeremy Swift as Norman, Leah Harvey as Marina Farrar, Ingrid Oliver as Diana St. John, and Nitin Ganatra as Rory.
Sweetpea is a crime drama that follows Rhiannon Lewis, who is determined to commit murder. But it isn't that simple. Sky's description of the show states:
"Rhiannon Lewis doesn’t make much of an impression - people walk past her in the street without a second glance. She’s continually overlooked for a promotion at work, the guy she likes won’t commit, her sister is off living her life abroad with her husband and her dad is really, really sick. So far, so s**t.
"But when everything in her life is turned upside down, Rhiannon is pushed over the edge. She snaps. Suddenly the wallflower is gone, and in its place is a young woman capable of anything…
"Rhiannon’s life transforms as she steps into a new, intoxicating power, but can she keep her killer secret?"
The show has achieved quite the praise, achieving an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Sweetpea is based on the novel of the same name by CJ Skuse, which was published in 2017. The show's screenplay is written by Kirstie Swain, Krissie Ducker, Laura Jayne Tunbridge, and Selina Lim.
Ella Jones is the director and an executive producer along with Ella Purnell, Kirstie Swain, Helen Gregory, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, and Patrick Walters. The show has been collaboratively produced by See-Saw Films and Sky Studios.
Sweetpea is streaming on STARZ, and Overcompensating is streaming on Prime Video.
