Before your teen hits play on Teen Wolf, it’s worth understanding exactly what the wildly popular supernatural thriller brings to the screen. The series, loosely inspired by the 1985 film, follows high schooler Scott McCall as his life takes a dramatic turn after being bitten by a werewolf. What begins as a quest for survival quickly spirals into a world filled with supernatural creatures, dark mysteries and high-stakes battles that test friendships and loyalty.

While Teen Wolf was marketed as a fascinating teen drama back in 2011 on MTV, its content often leans into adult territory and features many mature themes. The title is an impressive blend of horror, mystery and humour, but also contains extreme violence, gore and profanity, unfit for a young audience.

Here are some factors to consider before you let your kids stream Teen Wolf.

A title that literally has the word 'teen' in it and was the recipient of three Saturn Awards (including Best Youth-Oriented Television Series) and thirteen Teen Choice Awards, is bound to end up on your children's streaming devices. Pair it with teens' obsession with vampires and werewolves and Voila! Teen Wolf is exactly the kind of show that pulls a younger crowd. But is this popular supernatural series fit for teens?

Teen Wolf is rated TV-14 in the US, meaning that it is intended for viewers aged 14 and older and is considered unsuitable for children under 14 without parental guidance. Additionally, countries like Indonesia, Turkey & Thailand have rated it 18+ and countries like Brazil, Germany, Poland, Spain & Russia have awarded it a 16+ rating.

Since TV ratings are the best way to determine if a title is suitable for your kids, the age ratings for this supernatural teen drama suggest that it is unfit for children. A TV-14 rating also stands for "Parents Strongly Cautioned", indicating that the show may feature mature themes, s*xual content, and strong or coarse language that may not be suitable for younger audiences.

Things to look out for

MTV's popular supernatural title follows Scott McCall's transformation into a werewolf after he is bitten by an alpha werewolf the night before his second year of high school. Violence and anger are thus two major themes of the show. Here, we look at some of the factors that make Teen Wolf an unsuitable title for a young audience:

Violence and gore: While much of the violence is implied and obscured by fast-moving camera shots, there is a good amount of blood and gore in a majority of the scenes. Human hunters use crossbows to hunt for werewolves, which usually leads to intense scenes with bloodied victims. Incidents of strangulation, cutting and killing are not very graphic but huge in number. Characters often find themselves in situations that quickly escalate to intense fights.

Additionally, Teen Wolf features graphic and scary scenes, including Scott's transformation into a werewolf, which is accompanied by bared teeth and yellow eyes that might be too frightening for a young audience. In one of the scenes, Scott and Stiles dig up a dead body and a dead man comes to life in another.

Teen s*x and alcohol use: While the show is primarily a supernatural title, it does contain romance and young teen love. While the show does not contain explicit n*dity, teens are often shown kissing and making out, usually in hiding. While physical intimacy is barely featured in Teen Wolf, s*xual activities between teens are implied.

Additionally, the show features mild use of alcohol, dr*g and cigarette smoking in some of the scenes.

Profanity: Lastly, Teen Wolf contains coarse language and use of profane words like "Hell," "b*tch," "d*mn," and "holy cr*p''. Additionally, there is mild name-calling between teens, who usually call each other idiot, stupid and dumba**.

While Teen Wolf carries many mature themes and sequences, it also propagates healthy teen friendships and romances. Scott and Stiles' friendship and loyalty to each other are stand-out elements of the show that teach important messages about healthy friendships and unity to teens. However, the show should still be watched with caution as it also features a good amount of violence and teen anger, which might be difficult to comprehend for a young mind.
