Tehran Season 3 continues from the shocking Season 2 finale, never allowing either its main character or its viewers a second to exhale. The killing of Qasem Mohammadi, the poisoning of Marjan, and the death of Milad leave Tamar Rabinyan utterly vulnerable. Being chased by both Mossad and the IRGC, deemed a failure by her own agency, and mourning the death of the one person who held her emotionally, Tamar kicks off the season with no friends, no cover, and no clear escape route.

The series premiere starts with Tamar running away from the scene of Milad’s car bomb, still in disbelief, but she gets pushed into survival mode right away, while being pursued by Amir, a local Mossad agent. One event leads to another, and by the end of the episode, Tamar discovers some components that can prove that Iran is making a nuclear bomb.

As mentioned, Tamar is being chased by Amir, who then seeks to convince Tamar to surrender, enticing her with the chance of going home, but Tamar knows better; she knows Mossad has sentenced her to death. A brutal physical confrontation ensues. When Amir almost strangles her to death, Tamar sees his gun nearby and shoots him. Soon after, Mossad handler Yulia tries to reach Amir, only to learn that he has died. Now, having crossed yet another move she can’t take back, Tamar vanishes into the streets of Tehran.

With no other place to turn, Tamar is forced to stay the night at a women’s shelter, masquerading as an abuse victim. The shelter is a temporary refuge, but it also reminds her how alone she really is. Milad had been her emotional North Star, and Tamar is lost without him. At daybreak, she understands that hiding is not a permanent solution. Tamar is going to need some sort of leverage if she wants to live.

Eric is a South African nuclear inspector who believes but is unable to prove that Iran is covertly making a nuclear bomb. After several visits and inspections that fail to find anything that would prove the suspicion, Eric makes a bold and dangerous move on his next trip to a nuclear site: he plants a hidden camera. His colleague Nico catches him in the act, but initially says nothing. Later, Nico confronts Eric, telling him that such actions are crossing the line for an inspector, not a spy.

Eric says the camera was not operational, but that this might be the only chance they were going to get to find out the truth, given the thin skin following the assassination of Mohammadi. During their next inspection, Nico makes it very clear that Eric must deactivate the camera, and Eric is reminded that getting caught now would probably be fatal.

Tamar eventually hacks Marjan Montazami's system. Before the Israeli spy agency could track down the leak, Tamar had already taken Marjan’s reports, finding a vital fragment of incomplete intelligence. Disguised as a cleaning woman, Tamar sneaks into the PersCargo warehouse and hides until the package is unloaded.

She discovers components that can be linked without doubt to a nuclear weapon. She clandestinely snaps pictures of the proof, knowing full well that everything has changed because of this find. While these could perhaps be leveraged to negotiate for her survival with Mossad, Tamar wavers. Because she wants more than just proof, she wants certainty. Specifically, she wants to obtain Mohammadi’s computer and see how close Iran is, in fact, to building the weapon.

The episode concludes on a chilling cliffhanger. Tamar has broken into Faraz’s apartment, biding her time for the moment of her choosing. As they argue, Nahid turns her back on Faraz and walks away. Tamar makes a surprise appearance and holds Nahid at gunpoint. This way, the Season 3 Episode 1 climax sets up that Tamar is not fully prepared and isn't just following leads blindly anymore.
