Hijack is one of the most popular Apple TV+ shows, which won over the audience with its spine-chilling two seasons. The most interesting part about the series is that it follows a typical real-time format, where each episode is time-bound, adding to the thrill.

Idris Elba's character, Sam Nelson, was put in challenging situations in both seasons of Hijack. It's evident that his role as a corporate negotiator was not easy. Yet, he managed to win the viewers over with his skills and consistent performance.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Elba shared some more exciting details about Hijack Season 2. Hearing about the show from the star himself was something fans always looked forward to.

“Psychologically, I was trying to put him in a very different place. Physically, there is a difference to the way he looks from Season 1 and that was intentional. When you find out what is going on through the season, you realize this is a broken man who is trying to find those answers.”

Idris Elba shares details about Hijack Season 2

Elba told Deadline that Sam’s physical appearance in Season 2 was carefully planned. He looks worn down, heavier in spirit, and less sure of himself. Here we can see that the choice reflects what Sam has been carrying since the plane hijacking.

In the first season, Nelson was seen as a more strategic and confident man, but in the next season, we can see that he's shattered. Elba describes him as a broken man still searching for answers.

Elba even opened up about the questions from season one.

“We really thought about what we answered in Season 1 and the questions that were unanswered. What happened to Sam? Is he alright? He saved a lot of lives and went through a lot of trauma."

So, to fit the puzzle pieces together, it was necessary that the character reflect the burden from Season 1. The star even said:

“Leading characters often have a lot of real estate to hold up. I’m lucky I’ve had these really big characters that audiences don’t mind watching for a long time. In this case, it’s very different from some other characters: He’s a broken guy.”

The co-executive producer's verdict

Jim Field Smith, the other executive producer besides Elba, revealed that he wanted Nelson to be a different character from the person he was in Hijack's first season.

“Our whole guiding principle with Sam was that I wanted him to start Season 2 as a completely different character from the Sam Nelson you’ve left behind. In the very first frame when the camera resolves on him this season, you’re supposed to think, ‘What the hell’s happened to this guy?’”

Next, he shared details about the set. As we know, this season is set on a train, instead of a flight. So, they needed to create the U-Bahn, a subway that runs across Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and Vienna. It was not an easy task to create a replica in London.

“I wanted it be a perfect replica. It couldn’t be conveniently slightly easier to film in, and that’s partly because I knew I wanted to film with the real deal in Berlin. It had to match. It had to be literally a millimetre perfect recreation, so that was a big challenge.”

Elba and the creators hint that Season 2 could close Sam’s story. They also leave the door slightly open. Elba jokes that Sam may be done with transport-based disasters. Still, he admits there is one more version of Sam’s story worth telling.
