HBO’s hit fantasy drama adaptation Game of Thrones continues to expand its universe. A new season of House of the Dragon is underway, and a spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has been newly announced. The David Benioff & D.B. Weiss classic is well-known for its complex plotline led by an ensemble cast. It centers on the fictional kingdom of Westeros, with the seat of ultimate power, the Iron Throne, at its heart.
The GRRM masterpiece has also delivered some of the greatest fight sequences in the history of TV. Back in 2021, lead star Peter Dinklage appeared on The Graham Norton Show talking about his character arc. It was at this point that the Emmy-winning actor revealed he was never directly involved in any of the fighting and ended up sharing an on-set story.
Dinklage said:
"I was at the battle with an axe and I chopped a guy's leg off. The gentleman whose leg I chopped off....God bless him....an amputee. So, I knew he was probably about 70 years old . So, the one man I did kill early on in the show was about a 70-year-old amputee, so, that's not very heroic."
Peter Dinklage did not have a great experience with his Game of Thrones fighting sequences
Back in December 2021, Peter Dinklage appeared on The Graham Norton Show to talk about his award-winning HBO drama Game of Thrones. In the show, he portrayed Tyrion Lannister, the son of King Tywin of House Lannister. Despite not being a "heroic" face of the plot, Dinklage won millions of hearts over the years with his character's witty presence and tough outer core. His kind heart and intense dialogues often stole the show.
Tyrion is definitely a survivor despite his physical limitations, which never stopped him from outshining other characters. With a strong moral compass and sharp thinking (perfectly suited for politics), Tyrion Lannister drove the plot of Game of Thrones. His presence became even more impactful than leading roles like Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, or Cersei Lannister.
However, when it came to fighting sequences, Tyrion Lannister, aka Peter Dinklage, was not the best candidate in Game of Thrones. In the 2021 interview with Graham Norton, the award-winning star sportingly shared one of his on-set stories where he accidentally chopped off the leg of a "70-year-old amputee" while filming a battle sequence.
Dinklage further sarcastically revisited how his character shot his father (Tywin Lannister) "on the toilet," and despite all the controversies, fans continued to admire and love his character. Game of Thrones initially portrayed Tyrion Lannister as a character who was often looked down upon, a son deemed of no use, and a brother least favored among his siblings. He was also shown as an heir who could never fully take matters into his own hands.
However, thanks to George R.R. Martin's creative genius, Benioff & Weiss' impeccable direction, and Peter Dinklage's flawless delivery, the character grew beyond his limits. Dinklage's 2021 interview with Graham Norton further validates this.
