The official cast announcement for The Age of Innocence is finally here!
Netflix is currently in its classics' adaptation era, and fans are here for it. After earlier announcing a Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen) adaptation, the streaming giant has now announced the lead cast for Edith Wharton's classic 1920 novel, which even won her the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, making Wharton the first woman to win the prize.
What's more? The celebrated American novel was also previously adapted into a 1993 feature film by legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese, earning five Academy Awards, one Golden Globe, and a BAFTA Award.
Set during the Gilded Age (1870s) in New York, The Age of Innocence is a classic tale of forbidden love that explores themes of marriage, love, lust, and identity through its three lead characters, who find themselves in a complicated love triangle.
Here is the recently announced cast for The Age of Innocence.
The Age of Innocence cast and character guide
Netflix is set to introduce Wharton's classic tale of love and romance to a new generation. In 1993, actors Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Winona Ryder, and Miriam Margolyes immortalized Wharton's characters in Martin Scorsese's beloved adaptation. Now, a new set of young actors are all set to bring this classic love tale to the small screen.
Here is the complete cast and character guide for Netflix's The Age of Innocence:
1) Ben Radcliffe as Newland Archer:
Newland Archer is the dashing protagonist of Wharton's classic tale, who is also one of the most eligible bachelors and a successful lawyer living in New York with her mother and sister.
As a part of New York's Gilded Age elite, Newland's life has been governed by customs and traditions, and he is soon to be wed to May Welland. While Newland is happy and eager to start a traditional marriage with May, his life changes when he meets May's cousin and Countess Ellen Olenska.
Actor Ben Radcliffe will bring the dashing character of Newland Archer to life in The Age of Innocence. Radcliffe is most famously known for playing the role of Ralen in The CW series Pandora. He previously also appeared in Masters of the Air and Anatomy of a Scandal.
2) Kristine Froseth as May Welland
May Welland is Newland's sweet fiancée, a typical, dull, and uninteresting woman raised by the traditional New York society. She is a firm believer in traditions and a complete rule-follower, looking forward to her exciting marriage with Newland. May aptly captured the hypocrisy of the 19th-century New York society, which educated women into becoming submissive wives from their childhood.
May is also in sharp contrast with her cousin Ellen, which ultimately creates problems in her marriage.
Kristine Froseth is the next addition to The Age of Innocence cast. Currently, she is playing the lead role of Nan in another period series, The Buccaneers, on Apple TV. Forseth has also previously appeared in Looking for Alaska and When the Streetlights Go On.
3) Camila Morrone as Ellen Olenska
Ellen Olenska is a free-spirited, scandal-struck, and divorced woman who returns to New York society at the start of the series. After fleeing an unhappy marriage, she returns to her family, but continues to live an unconventional life, which is completely in contrast to her cousin May.
After Ellen helps Newland see beyond the traditions of New York, they strike up an unusual friendship.
Daisy Jones & the Six star Camila Morrone will bring Ellen's character to life in The Age of Innocence. Morrone also played the character of Roxy in The Night Manager.
4) Margo Martindale as Mrs. Manson-Mingott
Mrs. Manson-Mingott is the powerful matriarch of the Mingott family and May & Ellen's grandmother. As part of the elite New York society, she is stubborn, entertaining, greedy, and defiant.
Margo Martindale is the final actress announced in The Age of Innocence cast. Martindale played Ruth Landry in Prime Video's comedy series The Sticky and Audrey Bernhardt in Sneaky Pete.
Netflix has not yet announced a release date for The Age of Innocence.
Wharton's adaptation is brought to the small screen by Emma Frost (Shameless and The White Queen) and will be directed by Dying for Sex fame Shannon Murphy.
