What is the plot of The Americans?
The Americans takes place during the Cold War and focuses on a Russian couple, Elizabeth Jennings (played by Keri Russell) and Philip Jennings (Matthew Rhys). The two are KGB agents posing as Americans in the United States. They have to keep hiding their true identity from their neighbor while doing their work.
How does The Americans end?
The final episode of Season 6 of The Americans is called START, and it came out on May 30, 2018. Towards the end, the cover that the Jennings have been trying to protect is finally exposed. Elizabeth, Philip, their son Henry, and their daughter Paige are now forced to leave the country and fly back to Russia.
The couple decides to leave Henry. He stays because he is already settled in the US and has no idea his parents are spies. This is where the shock is delivered, as Paige suddenly gets off the train. The Jennings are looking at her as the scene plays out without any dialogue. They decide to leave Henry in the country because he doesn’t know that his parents are Russian spies.
Paige, who is really close to her brother, might have gotten off the train because of Henry. She cannot live separated from him and hence decides to take a leap of faith. Both Jennings talk to Henry, where they confess their love for him. However, Paige cannot say goodbye to someone she really loves.
Philip and Elizabeth reach Moscow in the final scene as they stare at an uncertain future. Since they have been living in America for so long, they have nearly gotten used to that lifestyle. So the two will have a hard time adjusting to a new life in Russia that is headed by Mikhail Gorbachev.
Holly Taylor, who plays Paige, spoke to Gold Derby about why the character doesn’t go to Russia. She said that Paige was angry at her parents for lying to her. Paige also doesn’t know Russian, so it would be hard for her to adjust.
"I think she’s thinking that her parents have lied to her so much and she’s been betrayed pretty much her whole life that what was she gonna do if she moved with them to a different country, where she couldn’t even speak the language and things like that? I think she knew that there was really no hope for her there and she didn’t really trust her parents at all anymore."
